The neocons knew they could never get nasty, snarly, SOB Cheney elected to the top job so they chose the chimp, an affable stooge, for that position, while entrusting the real power to Cheney, the man behind the curtain.

Chimp gets the photo ops, ribbon-cutting, and fundraising duty. Cheney runs the show. Will be interesting to see what happens to this arrangement if Crashcart gets indicted.

19. I think Cheney realized they had a problem with Bush

Had Bush seem more qualified to do the job Dick probably would have selected another candidate for VP. But Bush basically was the figurehead and probably came off as such a 'fuck-up' that Dick & Co. figured that the best thing they could do was just give Dick the #2 position so he was right there to hold Bush's hand through all of this.

Why do you think they want Bush to take such long vacations and time away from the White House - because Bush frickening interferes with Cheney & et al doing their job

18. Maybe the question to ask is why did Dick Cheney pick Bush?

Cheney was part of the PNAC/Carlyle group from the Reagan/Bush Sr. era. That group wanted to continue on the legacy of Reagan but needed someone 'likeable' they could run for president.....Hence 2 Bushes with no political experience (or real world for that matter) running for governors of large states. Jeb really was the first choice as their candidate but he lost in 1994 so they ended up with Bush.

Bush never picked Cheney - Cheney and his ilk picked Bush. Cheney was to decide who was the best choice for VP but I'm guessing they figured Bush was such a fuck-up it was best just to do the job himself

20. In all seriousness, weren't there some problems with Keating?

The big speculation at the time was on Oklahoma Gov. Keating. But there was something in his record that made him unattractive. Anybody remember? I remember it being some minor scandal but one that would've gotten more attention in a national race.

Not that it was the actual reason. I'm sure there were others. But it was a suggestion at the time.
