Yeah, I got the boys out during a calm spot. I saw some transformers blowing up while I was out. They make a giant bright blue explosion. We lost power a few times but it comes back. I am going to try and make another pot of coffee before it goes out again.

89. Thanks
for your kind words. As I write this, it is now 1:00 in the afternoon on Monday. I'm doing all right. It is very windy here, and I'm sure some tree branches and the like will be thrown all over the place. Other than that it appears to have been a very mild impact for us, with the storm proper having passed south of here. Think we just got the castoff effects. Power is still on and none of the houses on the block look to have taken damage.

My heart goes out to the people who really got the worst of it.

47. Cold front vs. Hurricane
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 06:06 AM by teach1st
My thoughts go out to all of those in South Florida. Hang in there. Here in the Tampa Bay area, it's tropical storm-like conditions, with something interersting. The approaching cold front, the mass that has steered Wilma these past few days, is eroding the rain north of us. The temperature drop at the edge of a tropical system is amazing.

Thank you to all the DUers who are helping us all through this. You don't know what a big difference it makes. I'm sitting here trying not to bawl. I'm not alone -- my husband is here (and awake now). Still, it feel so nice to have all your happy thoughts, prayers, golden lights, love, and hugs.

Every time I think I'm going to lose my power or internet, everything starts working again. So I'll be hanging around for as long as I can. I just wanted to be sure and thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.

I hope everyone in Wilma's path stays safe. Please send extra prayers and warm thoughts to all the people who can't get in touch with DU. We hope they're safe and can find some comfort.

Power is threatening to go out again ...

60. Who the heck coined that, anyway?
Makes us sound like a bunch o' hillbillies ... not that I have anything against hillbillies. ;) Even the weather men make fun of it.

79. I'm a hillbilly. So hunker down!
Don't know the origin of the word, but my guess it's a merge between "hide" and "bunker". Go hide in your bunker because the weather is nuts!

Wishing you protective energy and positive thoughts.

My advice is shower. I really missed not being able to shower after Katrina when everything was broken. A couple days after the storm, it rained and I ran out with shampoo and rinse and bathed in the rain.

I wish you well.

66. Good morning and thanks for asking.
Don't know what I'd do without DU and all you nice people. Here in south end of W. Palm Beach it's getting worse by the minute. Power is flickering and hope to get this out before it goes off altogether. Can take the wind and rain but worried to near death about tornadoes which look to be plentiful. Take care and stay safe everyone. It'll be over soon I hope.

69. Good morning everyone.
Best wishes to all our Florida friends to the south of us.

Just some wind and rain here in the Tampa Bay area. Have some branches down, hearing a few thumps and bumps and my wind chime is chiming - nothing like what everyone to our south is going through this morning.

The cats are mad at me. Sitting at their locked cat flap, staring at it - turning to look at me - then back to the cat door. Don't know if they're trying to will me into opening their door or thought control the rain away.

Stay safe and dry everyone. Check in when you can so we know you're all right. Thinking of you.

80. Hang on trumad.
Radar showing some nasty stuff coming up your way. Hope your sister will be o.k.

Looking ahead, how weird is it that we're gonna have a cold front drop on us the next couple of days? Down in the 50's at night.

81. and thank you for this thread.
It's good to hear from so many people who are in my thoughts this morning.

Watching the Weather Channel, people to the south and in central Florida are not faring as well as we are. Our winds are in the 30-50 mph range, so the branches and palm fronds we're losing probably needed to come down anyway.

Just finished reading an article that has my blood boiling
'Here, It's Tomatoes And Melons 1st'

IMMOKALEE - -- The buses arrived early Sunday. But not for evacuation.

In Immokalee, the state's largest farmworker community, an approaching hurricane meant crops needed to be picked, even as emergency shelters opened at 8 a.m.

Workers boarded the buses and went to the fields.

It's the way of life here in northeast Collier County. There are crops to consider -- tomatoes, watermelons and more. >snip<

Located about 50 miles from Naples, Immokalee should be inland enough to escape storm surge from Hurricane Wilma, which is expected to make landfall early today.

Officials, though, are worried more about wind. Many of the mobile homes already appear damaged with dented panels, sagging roofs and no visible tether holding them to the ground.

My best to those in the thick of it.

more on this soon. please will you post a thread entirely on that reality, once you and others have come through and recovered some?

more on that later. i'm being called away for a couple hours.

83. The eye is over us!
:woohoo:

We just went out to see how we're doing. Every grapefruit from the tree is on the ground. Branches all over the place from palm trees, etc. NO DAMAGE to the house or screen enclosure.

Hearing the wind was a bit scary. It was like the house was breathing, but I felt safe. This is the worst one we've been through yet. We have glass block windows in the kitchen and family room (they don't require hurricane panels), so we are not completely in the dark. It's a little less spooky with the sunlight. It's downright calm outside right now. :)

The cats are totally freaked out ... I don't even know where they are. Poor little things. They just don't understand. I tried to hold Satchmo (he's my baby) in his baby blanket, but he wanted to hide somewhere. :loveya:

We have about 30 minutes of calm and then we get the back end of the eye wall. We should be OK.

Power is out and I'm on battery and dial-up. Just wanted to check in. Thanks again, everyone!

I hope the rest of you are safe.

 :loveya: :pals:

87. Almost time to say goodbye to Wilma!
The second half has been exciting, to say the least. Something hit one of the hurricane panels -- from what we can see from looking straight down through the bottom of the panels, it's someone's solar panel. We have no idea if our solar panels survived. Haven't really heard anything rolling around on the roof.

My laptop battery is a piece of shit. Tells me it has 2.5 hours and lasts more like 20 minutes. I'm hooked up to the car right now, just to charge the battery. I'll have to conserve the power a little better.

I think we have seen the worst of it, according to the map they're showing on TV. We've caught the edges of hurricanes before, but never had one go right over the house until today.

I'll keep you updated ... and I'm anxious to read how others are doing. I hope everyone is safe. Prayers and warm thoughts coming your way.

 :grouphug: :pals: :loveya:

88. Good to hear from you!
Wind is still whipping around up here in the Tampa Bay area, but the sun is shining.

Hold on AirmensMom and all of our Florida friends riding this out.

It's really moving fast. Hope you don't have to put up with it much longer, that the damage isn't too bad, and that the power and your lives will be restored very quickly.
