Wealthy Bush contributor to oversee coast recovery
By Lara Jakes Jordan
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Donald Powell, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., has been assigned to oversee the federal government's disaster recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast, the Bush administration announced today.

Powell, 64, a wealthy contributor to President Bush's presidential campaign, will be in charge of the long-term plans to rebuild the states hit by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the late summer. The sluggish federal response to Hurricane Katrina, the first and most damaging of the two, particularly has been widely criticized. <snip>

Powell traveled in early September to areas in Louisiana and Mississippi struck by Katrina, and met with state banking commissioners and local bankers as he inspected the damage to banks' operations and services. In recent weeks, he was under consideration to be named an overseer of the private-donation fund for Katrina headed by former presidents Bush and Clinton — a position he would have held while continuing as FDIC chairman. <snip>

One of the "Pioneers" who raised at least $100,000 for Bush's presidential campaign, Powell has great personal wealth. <snip>

1. I thought KKKarl was doing this?

Did he just get moved aside... did they determine that he is too
radioactive just now?

Or was I just dreaming?

2. It just never stops, does it?
One more reason why I remain old, tired and cynical.

4. I think "recovery" involves more than banking
What are this fellow's credentials for this job?! I don't think how much money he pissed into the Bush pot matters as far as managing a severe hurricane recovery effort!

5. Chairman of the FDIC, overseeing gov't recovery efforts?
Pray tell, who thought up this brilliant idea? I don't give a shit about how much money he has, what kind of experience allows him to even be considered?
Man, this admin is just racking up their incidences of ineptness.

7. Another croney?
This is just so un-fucking-acceptable.

The local leadership should refuse to meet with this asshole. Period. Send some kid intern with a message to get the fuck out of the state, in those exact words.

9. Yep, another. This is important. It will be found out, but
people will suffer in the interim.
