Probably not advisable for, say, a D.C. protest!

6. Glad to see they are Anti-Bush, not Anti-American, as the media is spinnin
as the media is trying to spin it. The MSM would love an "us" against "them" scenario w/Latin America and it doesn't appear Latin America is falling for it. Let's hope Americans here don't either.

This is all laid at the feet of Bush, and I will never rise to defend him.

He never gets to see this when it happens at home. I doubt the staff prepares a DVD for him of American protests.

24. I wonder if he even sees the protests at all. They may not let him see.
Keep in mind, that this is a man who doesn't read or even watch the news. I think that he might come unglued if he saaw the protestors. They keep him in a bubble. In Argentina, the conference venue is being guarded by (get this) 8,000 security forces!

10. They must read DU! They used one of our fave Bush pics! (first 2 photos)
I love the last picture! Diego Maradona's shirt is just perfect!

Do you think Bush's aides even allow him to see these pictures or TV coverage of the event? They had to make a Katrina DVD for him, remember?

32. explanations
I was wondering if someone, Pickles or somebody, had to explain to the chimperor just whose picture it was on all the flags and posters? I'd not heard that the host countries had created-what were they-"free speech zones". The pictures or tv coverage could be easily kept from him, but the actual events I don't know.I'm sure they're doing their best to legitimately protect the simple twit. It would be an embarrassment anyway to have him gunned down on your country's streets regardless of how you felt about him or his administration's policies.

46. There are 8,000 police and other security forces in the town and around
the building(s) where the conference is occurring. I'm not sure if the protesters are within the sight of the building.

In Europe(Holland and Denmark most recently), whole sections of town and roadways are shut down. Traffic is stopped and there is military security. People are instructed not to come out of their houses or onto their balconies on Bush's route. Sometimes he takes a helicopter to avoid driving through protesters.

When he went to England, the route he took NEVER went anywhere near the massive crowds of protesters. His security staff wanted to put bulletproof glass in his bedroom window in Buckingham Palace. The Queen said no way.

He travels with a massive force of multiple armored cars, weapons, security and his own chef. He never eats food cooked by anyone else.

Think back to his speech in an empty New Orleans. Even the few journalists to witness the speech were instructed to stay in their cars.

You may be too young to remember when Vice President Nixon and his car were attacked on several occassions during a visit to South America. He was even spat upon. Google it. They hated Republican policies even then.

Actually I remember quite well trick dicky from yorba linda's reception during his ill-fated junket to South America.I did not realize that the chimperor was typically moving inside such a large security bubble. That comes damn near paranoia if you ask me.Especially the personal chef thing near monarchical that.

13. Can anyone seriously explain the appeal of Che Guevara?
...apart from the phenomenal post-mortem support he has provided to souvenir T-shirt vendors? The 'hombre del pueblo' line wears thin after a few decades. I don't get it.

20. Would you say that about MLK, or Gandi, or Cesar Chavez....
They were "hombres del pueblo" too.

It "doesn't wear thin" to the people who have been directly affected by his life and actions.

27. Read up...
I suggest a biography from Jon Lee Anderson. "A Revolutionary Life."

He gave his life to fight the atrocities being committed against the Latin American people. Your question is similar to asking what is the appeal of MLK to blacks.

18. Do you think they know that millions of us are in solidarity with them?
Maybe we should send Hugo Chavez (and leaders of other popular political movements in all nations, such as that woman in Burma who is the democratically-elected leader - I can't remember how to spell her name and I am in a hurry to get back to work haha) a letter from all of us DUers, sending wishes of goodwill and solidarity and reminding them that there are millions of oppressed here in Amerika, too.

29. They're protesting in Brazil, too!
Anti-Bush demonstrations also began in Brazil. In the capital, Brasilia, where Bush will arrive tomorrow night for a meeting with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, about 1,500 people marched from the cathedral to behind the U.S. embassy to protest the proposed U.S.-sponsored Free Trade Agreement of the Americas.

Bush Effigy

Singing Brazil's national anthem, they burnt an effigy of Bush, decorated with a moustache to look like Adolf Hitler, and a swastika on his arm and waved banners: ``Death to the Warlords'' and ``Bush, Fascist, You are a Terrorist.''

``These demonstrations will help push Latin American governments to be more independent in trade negotiations such as'' talks for an Americas free trade pact, said Gustavo Petta, head of the Brazilian students union, which helped organize the protests. Petta wore a red T-shirt with the image of Che Guevara, the Argentine guerrilla fighter who helped Fidel Castro rise to power in Cuba.
