Giving the term 'a vicious cycle' new meaning.
It's no surprise that the debate on the run-up to the invasion of Iraq has gotten to the point where it is today - with Bush and Cheney falling back on their old tactic of demonizing anyone daring to criticize their march to war. Josh Marshall put up a pretty good description of the process yesterday, and pointed out that it's pretty clear evidence that Rove is once again pulling the levers on the White House Spin Machine.
After watching Bush smear and trash all opponents for two and a half years, the American people have pretty much had enough. But for all the talk we hear about how brilliant Bush's spin team is, they have one fatal flaw - they believe that the more they talk, the more people will come around to their point of view. It's this tin ear that guarantees Bush and Cheney (and any other Republicans who aren't running away from them at this point) will continue to hammer critics for being unpatriotic. And it's this tin ear that will drive bush's approval numbers even lower in the coming months.
It's a vicious cycle, with the emphasis on 'vicious.' And by staying the course of their scorched-earth policy, they will dig themselves even further into that hole they're currently standing in.

I actually don't think this is Bush's spin team. I think this is Bush. This is "I won this election so I'm all grown up now and I get to do the presidenting my way and I'm the president and I know what's best and if other people disagree it's because they're stupid and I need to keep explaining until they're smart." It comes out of Bush's unwavering belief in his own rightness.
