Fundies & conservatives: The thing they fear most is change.
The world is moving faster all the time, & they're afraid of being left behind, so they're trying to drag all of us back to their level.

Things were so much EASIER when the man brought home the bacon, the woman stayed home, cooked & cleaned & raised kids, & the children followed suit. Boys played sports & girls played with dolls. Everyone went to the same church. Life was predictable.

You had your role & were assigned to it. You never met anyone who wasn't just like you. It's not like that anymore, & these people can't handle it.

Just my .02.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

1. Everybody does that to a certain extent, though
It's just that we pick different models on which to base our idea of what the future should be. But you can't imagine the future without reimagining the past in a way.

Of course you don't have to favor a repressive society as your model (which the Fundies and COnservatives do).

8. But if they use different models...
then it's not really the same thing at all. And not everybody even lives according to a model. Whatever that even means.

9. Everybody lives according to something
But if you are going to paint a picture of a future society you would like to build in almost all cases you start with some idealized version of a past society.

Even Marx's golden future (after communism had worked) bore a striking resemblence to an idealized ancient athens.

2. Only in the imaginations of the republicans was the world ever like this.
What they don't tell you that during this time blacks had to use filthy toilets marked "Colored" or not use a toilet at all. That black children's text books were taken away if the white schools needed them. That millions were going hungry but we just never talked about them. That beating your wife and children nearly to death would only get you a slap on the wrist and child molesters were rarely prosecuted.

The world the republicans want to go back to never existed for most of America and it never will.

7. Unfortunately many people
only have black and white old TV shows like Leave it to Beaver and Ozzie and Harriet to judge what those days were like.

Life was good for me back then because I was a child. But my parents had plenty to worry about then, just like now.

But I agree that many fundamnentalists look at those days through rose colored glasses.

4. This is Why...
...I sometimes want to leave the US. I want to be with the people who are moving to the future, not living in the past.

6. I think what they fear most...
Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 08:47 AM by C_U_L8R
is being exposed as fraudulent christians.
Really...
why do they make such a big fuss about their faith???
Could it be that they really have NONE... ???
Or could it be that they actually worship a different deity?
(whether they know it or not)
Lets take a look at this for a moment...
These so called "fundies" are certainly NOT
love your neighbor type folks. And just take
a look at the people who represent them,..
these slick vain TV preachers who feed upon
their most basic fears and direct them like
sheep while picking their pockets.
Does anyone really think that God or any God would
annoint hate-spewing Pat Robertson and the corrupt
and ironicly named Focus on the Family to be his/her
sole representatives here on Planet Earth???

SO..... this really begs the question
Who is the God of War? Who promotes Racial Intolerance?
Who is the God of the Rich People?
Who is the God that speaks into George Bush's head?
Who is the God that says we must kill and vanquish
all that do not believe as we do?

Who is this God all the Fundies are worshiping and idolizing?
Could it be... SATAN ???
Hmmmmmmmm ????

I thought so,

11. As a person that grew up in a conservative family/community, I say
you are 100% correct. They hate change, they hate progress. They don't see progress for what good it can bring, they see progress as a threat to their fragile lives.

14. The rug is being pulled out from under us, left and right
Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 10:06 AM by StopThePendulum
I think the world is changing too rapidly and too radically for most people to be able to digest in one sitting.

Among the sea changes occuring too quickly for most: radical corporate globalization, which stole decent-paying jobs out from under Americans, without the equal ascendence of union globalization to counteract the damage; the bankruptcy debacle, which snips the safety net while we are falling; the sudden and convenient emergence of the same-sex marriage issue, seemingly out of nowhere (which I think threw the 2004 elections to the repunks); etc.

Fundies are afraid of any change, unless they're the ones making all the changes. But even moderates (the majority of people), who usually welcome gradual change, are afraid of too much change too fast for one to adjust to. Change is stressful. Fundies seem to have little to no stress tolerance; moderates an average amount; and radicals an unusually high stress tolerance.

I'm not saying we should remain static and uphold the status quo or revert to past practices, but I do think we ought to slow down the rate of change so as not to stress out the masses. Most people are not open to radical change, especially when the changes are made without their input and/or consent.

The 1950s are over.

Repeat: The 1950s are over.

They've been over for more than 45 years.

So either evolve or shut yer piehole!
