6. Well it certainly IS insensitive, but OTOH, Pig Roasts are traditional
for Thanksgiving in many parts of the country.

Not everyone does the Norman Rockwell turkey thing.

9. I love a pig roast. Religious objections to food are just stupid.
1. Thou shalt not kill.
2. Thou shalt not steal.
3. Thou shalt not eat a sausage biscuit.

Which one of those things don't belong?

16. Roast Puppy Would Not Trouble Me, Sir
Dog is consumed more widely than is often thought.

What others do or do not eat does not trouble me, though for my part, life just is not worth living without pork chops....

11. To an observant Jew or a Muslim,
eating pork just isn't done, and it is not polite to knowingly offer it to someone of that faith. To have it in a Muslim nation smacks, in my mind at least, as being less than diplomatic. As my brother says, why not cook dog meat? The Native Americans consider dog meat a sacred meat to eat at feasts after a Vision Quest or Sun Dance, and I believe certain peoples in Southeast Asia eat it, too. But we wouldn't serve it because to a majority of Americans, eating dog would not be right. Realize, please, that eating pork has the same connotation for many people.

someone who has religious scruples against it, and eating yourself in a country or area that has those scruples. I'm not going to eat dog anywhere, but I'm not going to try and stop folks in Southeast Asia from doing so. Nor would I offer pork to observant Jews or Muslims. But if I eat it in front of them, that's my business.

The first case, serving or offering it is an affront; the other is just insensitive, but not totally wrong, either. It's a matter of perspective and proportion.

I just think that, in the context of our being in the country as occupiers, it is sort of rubbing it in.

14. And what about sensitivity to American Muslim and Jewish Troops?
There are many things one can serve in a mixed-cultural environment without "going there."

Really.

Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 07:53 PM by Marr
People in the US have pig roasts on Thanksgiving, and they are American soliders on US bases. Just because these kids happen to be that country doesn't mean they have to adopt the culture. They aren't tourists.

Besides- respect goes both ways. I would never tell someone else what they can and cannot eat, nor would I let someone else dictate my diet.

20. I don't think its "meant" to be insentsitive....
If someone wants to eat pork on their holiday they should be able to eat, we shouldnt get bent out of shape over personal habits.

21. I understand "live and let live...eat and let eat"...
...being a vegetarian, I never mention anything about any meal or it's dishes in public, and in my household I am the only vegetarian...yet meat is cooked daily for evening meals.

So I get non-inteference in other's dietary preferences.

I suppose my cynicism comes from the serving corporation: Halliburton, et. al.

It's just that because the armed services no longer feed themselves, and are reliant on Halliburton for dinner, that I wouldn't take it out of the sphere of possibility that the choice of roast pig (which is even more of a statement than simple glazed hams) might be Halliburton's idea of a holiday "joke"...or slap in the face.
