Very poignant Time photo. Not to be missed.

Last Vigil

On the eve of the funeral, Katherine insisted on sleeping next to Jim's body, so the Marines arranged a bed and offered to stand guard through the night. She fell asleep to music she and Jim had planned to play at their formal wedding celebration when he returned.

Bastards. Why are they doing this to our nation? These are families they are tearing apart!!! Not robots. Damn, my prayers go out to this family and all other ones like it... Repub or Dem, black or white, Catholic or Protestant... it doesn't matter. Death is death, and the deaths coming from this war are unjustified!! Damn! I'm mad...

18. When we went to California for Thanksgiving
There were several National Guard troops from one of the Airborne divisions coming home from Iraq on our flight. I had a hard time not bawling the whole time.

Then at the baggage claim area, one of the troops that was aboard our flight met her parents and her two children...I totally lost it then.

a young man came walking down the ramp to baggage in his uniform. There were about 20-30 of us, standing around...and the hallway erupted into applause...He just started bawling, and so did I. :( I wish we could turn back time.

16. these images make me think about how
some things really are unforgivable.

What do you supposed Bush would feel if he saw these photos? Of course, in order for that to occur there'd have to be a malfunction of the protective bubble that encases him and keeps him safely in his comfort zone. But for the sake of argument, let's say the bubble was breached and the fragile boy chimp was accidentally exposed to the unpleasantness. What would he feel?

I don't think he would feel much at all. These soldiers who died were not important after all. And neither are the families who loved them and who will now carry a lifetime of grief. They weren't wealthy or powerful. They were just a means to an end for the people who do matter, the ones who are wealthy and powerful.

Some crimes are of such magnitude they really are beyond forgiveness.

Home Comforts
Beck hugs his kids Stephen, 2, and Lindsey and Abigail, both 4. After one burial, "all I wanted to do was play with my children," he says. "But all I was thinking about while I was playing was all those guys out there in harm's way, making all that possible."

Beck seems like a genuine guy, but there he went and spouted the same talking points that are precisely the reason "those guys out there in harm's way" are getting killed.

Making what possible? Does he honestly believe his children have a safer future because we're in Iraq? Good grief.

24. The only other choice if for a revolt in the military.
Look, the military is a tool used by many governments for many things. The heart of the military is human flesh and blood. Bone and sweat. Chunks of that go flying apart just as fast to American soldiers as Iraqi civilians. No one wants to be there in Iraq. They follow orders the same as you stop at a stop sign.

This guy means that HIS fellow flesh and blood is out their dying because WE the people allow it. Go look at that picture of his wife next to the casket. Unbelievable.

103. All through the Army-Navy game, they kept saying that
"Those guys over there fighting for our freedom". My local TV kept interviewing people who were tailgating, who were going into the game, etc., and that was the constant refrain: "fighting for our freedom"

Bloody fucking hell they are.

They're good men and women, doing their duty, doing what they promised their country that they would do, and they're being betrayed by egomaniacs that surround the dim bulb they've installed in the White House.

These pictures make me mad. If they were pictures from WWII, I'd be angry at Hitler and Hirohito and Mussolini, sad for the families, and 100% behind FDR. But this ill-begotton mess -- it's the fault of Rumsfeld and Cheney and Bush and frankly the fault of anyone who voted for Bush either time.

55. Every time
a camera is allowed to capture a moment doesn't qualify it as a photo op--in terms of PR stunt, which is how I usually see the term "photo op" used.

She merely allowed the camera there. Other than that, I doubt she gave a damn about how much more "poignant" this or that detail might look to someone who viewed the photo.

That was all I was saying.

128. Signs of the times?
That some folks, when witnessing another's VERY REAL grief, choose to comment on how the grieving express their sorrow? You couldn't take five seconds to consider that she may have music/photos/e-mails from her beloved on the laptop?

Yes, there are signs everywhere that we have become a nation of cold-hearted people. Thanks for reminding me, Mr. McLuhan.

135. There's an extra level in that photo in the presence of the computer
There. Is that okay to say? Is it okay to offer a concept for discussion: that the computer adds another dimension to the photo? If that is approved, perhaps then discuss whether the photo is "creepy" or "poignant" or what have you?

"Why did she bring the laptop?" That's okay to ask. No need for some posters to automatically assume that question is unfeeling. Why not consider how that changes her experience-- or is everyone so used to being constantly plugged in that anything else is unthinkable?

I have enough confidence in the reading comprehension skills of DUers to post what I have posted without arousing such misguided assumptions and misplaced hostility.

As I posted before:

The horror of all the stories of lost lives and lost limbs in Iraq is that none of it was necessary.

More signs of the times:

A pubic so media saturated that it doesn't recognize the impact of media on experience. Or know who Marshall McLuhan is.

A public so attached (literally) to the computer that experiencing a solemn, once-in-a-lifetime experience without one is BEYOND COMPREHENSION OR DISCUSSION (on a computer).

You are certainly entitled to be a callous, critical human when discussing images of a fellow hurting, devastated human being, and I am also entitled to decide you are very impressed with yourself and that you are, in fact, a rather cold, callous human being.

I don't mind kicking this thread at all.

161. Your insistence on hostility is truly bizarre and misplaced
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 10:23 PM by omega minimo
It is also contrary to the spirit of your sig line, unfortunately.

"If modern man continues to flirt unhesitatingly with war, he will transform his earthly habitat into an inferno such as even the mind of Dante could not imagine...So we must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody that is far superior to the discords of war."--Martin Luther King, Jr., 1967

I am not responsible for your lack of comprehension or your anger. I acknowledged that I could have left off the word “creepiness” and might have been better understood.

“Is it okay to offer a concept for discussion: that the computer adds another dimension to the photo? If that is approved, perhaps then discuss whether the photo is "creepy" or "poignant" or what have you?”

That was intended as a peaceful post, trying to clear up some misunderstanding.

I am beginning to realize that my confidence in the good will and reading comprehension skills of DUers is sometimes undeserved.

You have already acknowledged that it is your ASSUMPTIONS that cause you to lash out at me:

“...(indicating to me that you didn't stop to think for a moment before posting or that you have some disregard for computers as a medium)...”

and severely misinterpreted my posts:

“...and then you claimed she was at a "photo op" and THEN you claimed hers wasn't a vigil. M'kay. Sorry, i just have a problem with your picking this gal apart.”

You ignored:

The horror of all the stories of lost lives and lost limbs in Iraq is that none of it was necessary.

Please check out BeTheChange’s reply mentioning Adbuster’s. Check that out and Marshall McLuhan, too. You might be interested and not so hostile in the future. Most likely this WILL be a photo in Adbuster's next issue. Maybe then you would be willing to give some thought to these unfamiliar concepts.

:patriot:

163. Oh, no. I never give thought to unfamiliar concepts. Not me.
Good one.

My sole comment here is that YOU were making assumptions and being "hostile."

Why do you insist hers "isn't a vigil?" Because it doesn't look like one to you?

Why do you call this a "photo op?" Do you think this is what this grieving woman would call it? She gave permission for her image to be captured. This does not mean she called ahead and hired the photographers.

And personally, I find the question, "why did she bring a laptop?" to be well, rather silly. Did she drive a car, too? Oops! She's sleeping on a mattress! In the olden days, people slept on fiber mats when they grieved over the dead. That Serta sure detracts from the poignancy!

Anyhoo, like I said before, you are free to post what you like and to make assumptions and I am free to do the same. And I will:)

166. Your personal attacks do greater disservice to this couple being honored
than my comments do. You misunderstood my comments and continued with increasingly personal attacks-- and now you wanna discuss your questions? Sorry-- homey don't play dat.

I tried to clear up what I thought might have caused confusion. I never meant any disrespect to the woman or man or family in this story. However, when accosted on DU by the likes of your posts, I don't feel compelled to justify anything to you.

You are "free to post what you like and to make assumptions" as you say. You are not free to make personal attacks.

Even on DU, people attack what they don't understand, rather than trying to discuss BEFORE the dissing starts. It "cheapens the discourse for everyone."

You have taken the most over-simplified and stupified way of looking at my posts and personally attacked me for it. You're free to your "assumptions" and to the limited discussions that will come from them.

145. At first glance, I thought it had to be a picture from Adbusters..
It was very surreal. The first thing I noticed about the picture as how out of place the computer seemed.. yet it's presence and blue glow seemed to command attention.

It's definately a nuclear family kind of picture... but it's realness, especially for those of us on DU who huddle around this screen reaching out into the digital mire to feel human connectedness, is breath catching.

Truly heartwrenching. These photos rock you to the soul and that mixes with anger and wanting to scream at the BushCo Evil Doers. This is also frightening since my niece's son is finishing his basic training with the Marines now. He bought into the lies when he was harvested in high school, and I could not convince him not to go. Two Marines from this area were killed just this week. These photos sicken me as I fast forward to the possibility....

I truly hope there is a God so **, Rummy and the rest of the monsters suffer in eternity for what they have done. As the poster above noted, I want to see them in the Hague first.

Scappoose Marine killed in Iraq bomb blast

05:37 PM PST on Friday, December 2, 2005
By kgw.com and AP Staff

FALLUJAH, Iraq -- A 21-year old Marine from Oregon was among 10 Marines killed when a roadside bomb detonated while they were on a foot patrol near Fallujah, family and friends told KGW on Friday.

Marine John Holmason of Scappoose died from the blast, which was the deadliest attack against American troops in four months. In addition to the 10 Marines dead, 11 others were injured.

"He died for this country and our freedom," said Holmason's grandfather, John Orr. "I'm just sorry that it happened."

EDITOR'S NOTE: "MR. ORR, YOU ARE WRONG... YOUR GRANDSON DIED FOR NOTHING AND THE DEATH WAS MEANINGLESS. WE HAVE AN IDIOT PRESIDENT WHO COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOUR GRANDSON, AND WILL NOT RESPECT OR EVEN UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN AND THAT OF YOUR FAMILY. YOU ARE DELUDING YOURSELF ABOUT THIS. I HOPE YOU SEE THE LIGHT SOMEDAY. A HANDSOME YOUNG MAN IS NO LONGER WITH US BECAUSE OF THIS SICK GOVERNMENT."

Plans are underway for a community memorial service for Holmason, who was was a 2002 graduate of Scappoose High School.

What honor is to be found in the carnage, this ruining of lives? This destruction? This devastation?

Do these picture look like "success" to you?
Is this what "winning" means?

Is that what "staying the course" looks like? Sleeping next to a dead body - a body whose warm touch you will never ever feel beside you again?

How many more pictures like these will it take for America to feel like she's saved face?

Let's us know a number so we can know when we are close to "victory."

Don't tell me you mourn the losses when you want the dying to continue.

This picture needs to be seen by every single war proponent. They should be forced to view it five times a fucking day!

The depth of this family's loss is unbearable, even for a dumb shit like myself gawking from the periphery. What makes this especially tragic is that the cause Jim Cathey died for will never be considered noble. The poor guy died for nothing. His family's lives are forever changed... for NOTHING!!!!

My hate for those who are responsible for this family's tragic loss burns with white-hot intensity... Dirty fucking bastards, the whole lot of them!!!!!!

99. What's even sadder is that I can relate to what those passengers felt.
I picked my dad up at the airport last August. This was around the time where the US 3rd battalion, 25th reg. out of Brookpark (the one my friend Jeff is in, who also went to Iraq for 7 months) lost several men in a 48 hour period. One of the young men who was killed by hostile fire, Cpl. Jeffrey Boskovitch, had a police-escorted motorcade out of the airport.

I saw that drive past . . . I had to go to a nearby set of stairs because I lost it. That was someone's kid and future husband. Jeff also went on two tours with Cpl. Boskovitch and talked to his sister after he died. That solidified my decision to appear at the demonstration on Sept. 24th.

George Antoinette and King Cheney XVI will burn in a black oily abyss for this shit.

100. "formal wedding celebration" that will never be, happens in every
war. Look at all the suffering that has been done by soldiers and their loved ones, for over 200 years, to protect and preserve our Constitution. Think about the politicians now in office, who would destroy the very things that all those Americans, have sacrificed so very much for, over all those years and years. The US Constitution is a tangible "NOBLE CAUSE," you can reach out and read it and touch it. Bush and his cronies have done nothing but attack the US Constitution and try to undermine it and render it meaningless, void, broken and bogus.

If anyone in America has a right to seethe today, it's the soldiers and their broken families, who are being torn apart forever, for an imaginary "Noble Cause," beyond reach, reason, or valid definition.

The Republicans have screamed repeatedly, "DEMOCRATS SHOW US Y-O-U-R PLAN!" But the ball rests in their court.

"O' Death where art thou sting,
O' Grave where art thou victory."

America is stinging from sea to shining sea, and all the Commander can do, is hide out from the mothers, daughters, wives and children, who wonder more every day about this "Noble Cause" and about ALL the causes of it.

150. WOW! Tie your wingnut friends/family to a chair and MAKE them watch this
Instead, of course, WE end up being the ones that watch it. And we have to realize yet again the horror and despair of having this filthy bunch of murderers as our "leaders".

127. The saddest picture
for me was the one of her pressing her very pregnant belly against the casket. She had an ultrasound picture of the baby boy she's carrying placed over his heart before they closed it. Unbearably sad. How can one look at those images and not be moved.

129. This one is the one that started my tears falling

A Father's Lesson
Jim Cathey's father, Jeff, hugs a Marine as his son's funeral nears. "Someone asked me what I learned from my son," he said. "He taught me you need more than one friend."

All of the photos are heartbreaking, but the look on that man's face and his words just got to me.
