LTTE about Flu and Evolution
Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 02:01 PM by raysr
A letter to the editor in the San Luis Obispo (CA) paper.

SOME DON'T NEED VACCINE

Recent news about the avian flu virus has raised concerns from main
street to the White House. There is the possibility, even likelihood,
that the virus will mutate into a form that can more easily infect
humans. As the president pointed out, a vaccine cannot be made until this evolution occurs.
This raises the concern that it may be impossible to create enough
vaccine fast enough to protect all our citizens.

But there is hope. Gallup polls tell us that up to 45 percent of
Americans don't believe in evolution.. Since random mutation is the
engine of evolution, these same people must believe that the virus
cannot mutate.

Therefore, there is no need to waste vaccine on folks who believe
there is no possible threat to themselves -- thus leaving a sufficient
supply for the rest of us.

Perhaps the president, given his doubts about evolution, may wish to
demonstrate his leadership by foregoing vaccination. This approach has
added benefits. Polls also tell us that disbelief in evolution is more
pronounced among the less educated, the poor and conservatives. If the
anti-evolutionists among these groups were to opt out of vaccination
then, through immediate deaths and natural selection, we would reduce
poverty, raise educational attainment, and become a more progressive
society

1. My thoughts exactly LOL
Waiting to see just how much faith creationists have when push turns to shove to get in line for a shot should this bug go pandemic after evolving into something that spreads easily person-to-person.

It baffles me that so many in rural areas, who breed animals to develop better critters for market and work out in nature can miss that which is all around them.

Acknowledging evolution does not even require one to disavow the existence of a higher being. It might make one come to terms with the fact that 'Gospel' is not truth, just some highly edited stuff written down before much was understood. Am thinking more will start agreeing with me if their neighbors start getting sick with avian flu or some variation of the virus.

2. Just for the record
I moved from a rural area, where I knew only a handful of "creationists"-- to a city, where they're everywhere, and homeschooling it into the next generation as well. Your prejudice is showing.

For the record:
I did not say ALL people in rural areas are creationists.

I did not say most city folk are not creationists

I DO LIVE IN A RURAL AREA

I used to live in large urban population centers

Have lived many years and made lots of observations on many different populations

I maintain that the rural people who believe in creationist propaganda are sorta not paying attention to what is going on in their own breeding programs.

Wanna rethink accusations of prejudice and just who's is showing?;)
