In times like these Ignore is your friend. Really.
Some really hot debate going on right now. I come down very much on a certain side and of course the ones who are on the opposite side make comments that infuriate me not because their right, but because I am having a problem with the context, tone and nature. I am now useing the enflamed threads as oppurtunities to put certain posters under ignore... probably just temporarily. Right now I am too disgusted and enraged to trust myself responding. I have already made some posts lately I dont feel that good about and I hate that...

The reason why I am posting this is to suggest that maybe some others might want to do the same. Others from both sides of the heated topica of the day. We can always take eachother off ignore when our individual outrage has subsided somewhat.

Consider this a Public Service Announcement, I guess.

47. Message boards still have rules. We all still have feelings (and minds).
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 01:22 PM by BlueIris
Even if you're passionate about your perspective, you need to state your positions within the boundaries of the rules we all agree to abide by. And I personally believe all of us have a responsibility to act like adults and civil human beings here, even if we find another poster's posts to contain impolite or offensive sentiments. People can't just post whatever they want here simply because it's a "political" message board. If Ignore helps you keep your sanity, use it. But don't forget 'alert.' We also have a responsibility to help the mods get the trouble-makers away from the civilized posters.

6. What, I can't see your thread to
comment? :hi:

I do that from time to time as that is usually the best response as opposed to prolonging the flamed discussion. Gives you something to do. Then, after I calm down and consider that perhaps I was part of the problem (usually), I go back in and clear my ignore list.

Out of 80,000 people, you gotta figure some of them are just going to be disagreeable. Humor is important - in general and to keep you sane.

Peace.

63. This thread was enlightening...
I thought that most others were using the ignore button same as you described. Kind of looks like we are in the minority? Hmmmmm. Perhaps the others have put us on ignore and never saw this thread? :) Or, maybe not too many want to admit that there are threads that hit their buttons. As there is a lot of snarking around on GD, I think the latter is more the case. Remember, humor helps even here!

And I don't know why asking a person to back up their claims with actual facts, instead of hateradio rhetoric with no basis, should be so offensive.
We need to get away from a society that just blathers nonsense with no basis. It seems like Bushian lying has infected our population.

31. There are a few folks on DU who do the opposite
They actually SEARCH for threads on certain topics so they can jump in and flame. One of them said he does this and he's been banned from posting to a DU group. I've called them what they are - trolls and had my posts deleted for that. Yes, they are DUers with high post counts so technically it's a violation to call them trolls. But what else do you call people who deliberately disrupt like that?

32. Its not them as much as me... I just can't help myself sometimes.
I believe there are others around that are the same way. Again not so much the posts/poster that pisses me off as my reaction to it. In real life I am extremely polite and tolerant, something gets to me online though and I forget about the humanity of the people I respond to.

In essence I just get really conflicted, I think others do as well and thats why I posted this. Just a reminder that there is a way to take the heat off when certain posters are aggravating you no end... and that some of that aggravation is likely your own doing.

Sorry if this thread and my OP aren't along your thoughts, but ignore was put there for people like me... I wish I could have the back of a duck sometimes but I don't.

Whenever someone responds to an issue-based post using the word "you" abundantly, I know they're either mentally or ethically challenged (or both). Ad hominems and straw men are the most intellectually dishonest of discussion tactics, imho - and altogether too frequently employed on DU these days. I can see other long-time DUers see it as well, considering the number of times I see Carlos (a devotee of straw men and ad hominems) memorialized.

But I have been personally attacked on occasion. If I say I like to broil hot wings rather than fry them and you think frying them is better, fine. Yeah, there are some people who just don't make the effort to be compelling or credible. In real life, you generally have to earn your interactions and your audience. People take advantage of the fact that you generally don't here, and run rampant. I say we restore the need for people to establish credibility.

55. Some people use ignore for ideological purity
They can't stand to be presented with challenges to their viewpoints, and put anyone on ignore who disagree with them.

If someone has hundreds of people on ignore, it is not that the people are not being credible or reasonable, it is that they can't stand to see their world view challenged. They are compelled to block out any ideas that are contrary to their opinion.

I don't have to listen to people exhibiting the same tendency toward conspiracy theories they try to inundate us with over and over, for instance. I don't have to get entangled with people who show the same tendency to argue manipulatively and/or dishonestly over and over. Do you spend a lot of time reading the same disingenuous talking points over and over again at Free Republic? Or people who try to give you a line that just isn't true? Are there people you avoid because you don't like the way they act? Then why do you knock me for trying to manage my time the way I'm sure you do all the time? I have no idea why you've all of a sudden started attacking me for this twice already, especially when you don't really know why I've put anyone on ignore. I've got a right to spend time here how I want it or not at all, and you really have no business saying that when you don't know why I do what I do.

70. Personally, yes I read the same disingenuous talking points over
and over again. It helps me to always come up with new counterpoints, and hone my opinions.

Sorry 'bout the jab.

I think we just had a misunderstanding. P. S. I actually do like your posts about first amendment issues a lot.

58. Why Not Just HIde The Thread?
Rather than go through it and put certain people on "ignore" you do know you can hide an entire thread with one click of your mouse. Right? That's what i do, rather than ignore posters. I just hide the whole thread. It can't bother me that way.

67. Nah, I welcome the confrontation.
It's so boring when everyone agrees.
