Common courtesy is neither a "War" or "PC" -- Happy Holidays!
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 02:06 PM by Armstead
Watching some "Christian" woman on TV today who is giving out Merry Christmas wrist bands to give other "Christians" the "courage" to say Merry Christmas against the forces of darkness, the whole idiocy of this struck home.

I don't know about you, but if i'm greeting someone who is a Christian, I might say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays without even thinking about which I use. But if I'm talking to someone who is Jewish or otherwise non-Christian -- or if i don't know -- I'll just say Happy Holidays out of politness.

That's neither anti-Christmas nor "politically correct." It's just a bit of thoughtfulness. Trying to characterize it any other way is just idiotic, or a bad case of "reverse PC."

So to all the anal retentive so-called "Christians" and their feelings of persecution, I just have one thing to say. "Happy Holidays."

1. Thanks, Armstead
You got the point!

"Merry Christmas" excludes everyone who isn't Christian.

"Happy Holidays" includes us all.

3. This is a discussion board. What would it be without petty BS?

I don't obsess over this, and there are certainly a lot more importanbt things to worry about.

But it does crystallize so many things that are screwed up, including the self-righteous perversion that right-wing fundies have done to Christianity and the shallow sensationalism of the media machine and the manipulative BS of the right-wing spinners, which really does serious damage politically in the big picture.

6. So sorry, I don't mean you or DU
I meant the fundies and the newcasters that are focusing in on the latest War On Christmas (tm).

5. Stupid Freeper morning DJ was discussing this, this morning -
first, he accuses those who don't celebrate Christmas as being overly sensitive about other saying "Merry Christmas" to them, and then in same breath says that he's bothered when store clerks say "Happy Holidays" to him rather than "Merry Christmas"! Just to give you some insight to his IQ, he couldn't remotely grasp the concept of Hannukah taking place on a different day each year because of the differences between the Hebrew and Gregorian calendars!

7. Exactly
I'm a Christian but if I don't know someone else and what they celebrate I say "happy holiday's" since there are many different religious holiday's going on this time of the year. Not just Christmas. So it's only polite. Whatever happened to the second commandment from Jesus? Love thy neighbor as thy self?

10. You're right
I think she's selling them....But supposedly "at cost." Like a wristband is going to empower people or magically give them the "courage" to say Merry Christmas -- against all odds.

Or maybe it's just a reminder because that brand of "Christian" needs reminding how to say Merry Christmas.

12. I worked at a grocery store where about 50% of our customers were Jewish
40% Christian, and 10% other. This was about 30 years ago while I was in high school and college, and I honestly don't remember either side shoving THEIR particular religious beliefs down the throats of other people by way of a religion-specific greeting. We all simply wished each other "happy holidays." No one was offended, no one was whining about a war on Christmas or a war on Hanukkah. No one threatened a boycott of the store.

But now 30 years later, there is a "war on Christmas"? Yeah, distract the stupid masses before they realize just how badly Bush has fucked them over.

14. This so called "War on Christmas" is nothing more than BS
It just another example of the right-wing showing their intolerance towards others with different beliefs. We all already know that they nothing more than a bunch of narrow minded bigots, this whole phony war that they made up in their heads, just proves it even more. That is why you only see the bigots, like Falwell, Robertson, Gibson, and O'Reilly pushing this shit down our throats every single year, and they for the most part always get their way, with cities, & stores caving in to their demands. In order to put an end to this shit, people have to stand up against their bullying, and tell them they don't care what these bigots are going to do them.
