Wal-Mart announces distribution center plans
By MARCIA LANECRESCENT CITY -- Wal-Mart announced Thursday it plans to build a massive distribution center in South Putnam County.

"
I believe God has given us a special opportunity:rofl: to make a difference to hundreds of lives," said Chamber President Wes Larson. He told the board that if it turned down the rezoning request, the chances of South Putnam getting future industry would be slim.
He said Wal-Mart is expected to provide jobs paying $12 an hour or $26,000 annually -- almost double the per capita average income of South Putnam.
Opponents say it will destroy the area's natural aspects and put an unfair burden on residents and the infrastructure.
"Good project, wrong place," said Michael Woodward, an attorney representing Lake Crescent Citizens for Responsible Growth. "We need to look at the scope and the size."

I'm torn here, when you read they will be paying $12 per hour which doubles the per capita income for that county, I think it's a good thing. On the other hand I know the huge distribution center will create all sorts of negative environmental issues for the surrounding area, and will support stores that pay minimum wage to the employees.
