2. He's from the Maryland panhandle
Which is the most conservative part of the state. You still find conservatives who will tell the truth on some issues, mostly from red areas in blue states.

He supports the idea, but it will take 30 to 50 years to come to fruition...

4. fission...or did you mean fusion?
Fission has long since 'come to fruition', even if not without obvious problems. Gen3 & 4 reactor designs under development promise more of fission to come.

6. You are correct...
I shouldn't discuss with the roommate, while watching CSPAN and posting on DU.

I'm not good at multi-tasking especially after a couple of beers.. LOL

8. Roscoe (R-Maryland) is kicking ass
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 10:22 PM by Tactical Progressive
This is his analogy:

The United States is like a young couple living off of their grandparents huge inheritance. Their lifestyle spending is 85% inheritance 15% earnings, and the savings are going to run out before they retire.

Then he brings up the pie chart to show the 86% dependency on oil and gas and only 14% on all other energy sources combined.

He even mentioned that almost all the food we eat is effectively oil and gas.

Other stuff:
Energy density of fossil fuels: one barrel oil is like 12 people working for a year. That's the quality of the energy we found. We collectively, the whole world, exploited it as irresponsibly as kids who find a cookie jar rather than figure out how to use it for the most good for most of the people for the most time.

What is it going to be like running down the other sides of Hubbard's Peak?

It's GOING to happen. The only question is when.

The world has never faced a problem like this. And it isn't temporary.

Conservation and efficiency must be addressed.

Answering Critics:
Technology will solve the problem: I hope they're right. I also hope you win the lottery. But 'miracle replacements' aren't an excuse not to deal with the problem.

10. He is constantly contradicting himself.
He is trying to spin it, but he is conradicting himself and making "our" case for us.

11. That was one of the best summations I've seen yet.
He knows his stuff. I kept waiting for him to go sideways on us with some republican twist. Nope.

Everything he said is right on the money. It's ugly, and people don't want to see it. I've been preaching the same thing for years, to deaf ears.

There is no easy answer to this problem. Not yet.

I wish everyone would watch that. It almost takes a degree in engineering to be able to follow it with any kind of meaningful depth.

I'll tell you one thing I got out of it- the killing that we're doing in Iraq is for nothing more than the control of oil that is at best a few years worth.

14. Here is the Albert Bartlett talk
...to which Roscoe Bartlett refers. This performance is remarkable. It will turn anyone into a doomer and it is just plain math principles. More specifically, this is a lecture on the consequences of exponential growth with regard to hydrocarbon use and population.
