LOS ANGELES - John Spencer, who plays vice presidential candidate Leo McGarry on NBC's "The West Wing," died of a heart attack Friday, his publicist said.

Spencer, 58, died at a Los Angeles hospital, said his publicist, Ron Hofmann. The death was first reported by the syndicated program "The Insider."

Hofmann released no other immediate details.

I loved his acting...he was a real sweet man with serious chops.

I SWORE To somebody back when they were leading up to Leo McGarry's heart attack that he didn't look so hot, and they tried to talk me out of it, that it was just makeup and lighting for his character's sake.

I'm telling you now, he'd been ill a long time...that much is obvious.

So sad...He and his character on TWW will be much missed.

I didn't know that. I guess they played that in with his character on WW. I remember when his character had the attack. I cried like a baby and just balwed my eyes out. :(

He was my favorite on the "West Wing." :( I'll miss him. The slideshow of him are very moving and beautiful. :( God bless him.
