I am not drunk. Please hear me out.
On Thursday morning, I was getting my daughter ready for school. I looked out my daughters bedroom window and saw a black SUV setting out front of the house. That was at 6am. I had my husband come look out the window. The SUV sat there for 40 minutes with one person inside with the dome light on. Then it drove away. So 10 minutes later the SUV was back. My husband called the police to report the SUV and within 1 minute the SUV took off like a bat out of hell. Now who ever it was must of had a police scanner in their SUV. Now-my husband had written a article about how bad this administration is. It was printed 2 weeks ago. I had written one and it was printed the day before this SUV happening. What would you think of this?

7. This has bothered me for the past few days.
If it happens again I will walk out and get his plate number and report it to the police. When this happened I thought that someone may be up to no good. The high school kids get on the bus around this time. That is why the hubby called the police to report it. But the more I think about it, makes me wonder if we are the victim of the secret service.

I just looked out my window and a car drove by aiming a spotlight at my house! I screamed at my son to look out there and see who the hell it was.

LOL It was the pizza guy. We forgot to turn on the porch light after we called to order the pizza.

109. More likely it's the hired contractors.
Secret Service are usually in uniform and marked visibly, from my understanding. They have contractors like Blackwater that do this sort of thing...they supplement the Secret Service and are sort of Bush's private security force.

5. Better mail your bills and Tax returns way ahead of the due
dates. They can intercept your mail, and often it will get to the mailed address late, while they take their time obliviating your privacy. I know. It happened to my Tax return last year.

6. Get a camera ready
and a notebook. If the vehicle comes back, record it in the book and take a picture/video. And report it again to the cops. If they persist, have neighbors ready to back you up - with cameras and video cameras- and go with you to confront these people, asking them what the **** they are doing in your neighborhood.

But, to ease your fears-it could be someone else (like a private eye doing surveilance, maybe not on you but a neighbor) who happens to have a scanner. I'd still do what I suggested above, especially calling the cops. They need to know if this keeps up.

37. You're not alone - I kid you not.
Do as the last poster said.

Keep near the window:

A camera w/flash.
Note Pad, and several workable pens.
Take photos. Document the type of vehicle, etc. to the best of you're ability.
Have your husband walk out and just walk around, casually checking you're own vehicle or something.

That should do it. Still, report it to the locals. At least that person will know you're not afraid because that's what it's about - intimidation.

Good luck! Been there. Done that. It's scary as hell, but once you learn to keep you're senses and reverse the psych, it will generally stop.

47. I had 3 different cars at 3 different times sitting at my house....
I went out and pretended I was getting something out of my trunk and got the license plate number. I also made a point of looking right at him. He left immediately. Another time I looked out the kitchen window and this guy was just sitting there reading some papers...sat for 1/2 at hour.....when he looked up and saw me looking at him...he gave this strange 'signal' of rubbing the side of his nose and then left.

The third time I saw someone out there....I smiled and waved. And he left. Haven't seen anything since....but at the time I had organized a MoveOn Rally at the Federal Court House regarding saving the Filibuster and a 'Welcome Wagon' for Rove when he came here to fundraise.

Nixon's administration did this...I have assumed all along that the neocons were doing it, too.

54. I'd only suggest that the flash not be used whenever possible.
Several reasons:

It'll draw attention to you.
Flash has little to no effect beyond several yards.
If you take a photo from behind a window, the flash will reflect back.

Take care.

13. I had something similar occur last year...
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 07:03 PM by KzooDem
I noticed an unmarked utility vehicle parked in front of my house, running, for more than 20 min the morning after I had returned from being out of the country for four weeks. It had two very large antennas on it. This was also the morning before the 2004 election. Prior to my trip overseas I had been attending many Kerry meet-up gatherings, and had written a scathing Viewpoint column about nationalism disguised at patriotism that was published in the local paper just prior to my departure.

I went out to the street to ask the man driving the van what he was doing there but he took off after I came out of my house.

I have no idea if I was being watched, but I can't help but feel freaked out when revisiting this episode. I did breeze through security and customs the day before so if they were watching me, I must not have been on the big, bad scary person list...just the nusiance list, LOL.

What scares me MOST about being surveilled, if that's what it was, is that someone is wasting a lot of time and money keeping tabs on a harmless citizen while a lot of nefarious people out there slink about.

14. On a somewhat related note...
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 07:10 PM by IowaGuy
have been noticing a significant number of "Homeland Security" cop cars around here....fully marked, lights, cherrys, cage for a back seat, etc...regular kind of wagons you would see on a city beat...again, fully marked as "Homeland Security"....carrying Federal license plates....what are these for and what is their beat. Some have had a "Witness Relocation Program" sticker on them.
This just seems odd to me you would think you would want a slightly lower profile for that type of operation, can't really figure out what they are doing. Every time I see one...the driver and or passenger are in plain clothes...

18. Here's how I think we should fight back....
1. Acquire a battery operated bullhorn
2. When something like this occurs repeatedly, not only get the license plate, but document the vehicle by still photos or video.

3. Rather than approach the vehicle (which if it was some pedophile or potential burglar, could be risky), come out with your bullhorn and loudly announce to the neighborhood that we are all under surveillance by persons unknown, describe the car, license plate number, and report that you have made a report to local law enforcement.. Then announce that neighbors should similarly report any strange vehicles continually present in the neighborhood-- and that they should be aware that this could be illegal governmental surveillance... Ask your neighbors to flood the police with complaints and demand a trace of the license plate and a neighborhood meeting where the police would have to notify the residents of their findings from the license plate trace....

4. Follow up with a summary printed notice to your neighbors, including a photo image of the car, details, etc.

I would guess, that no "agent Mikes" will come near your neighborhood again....

What a wonderful idea. I do not have a bullhorn, but I could get one. I will keep watch next week and see if the SUV comes back. My guts are telling me that he must have a police scanner. Because the first time SUV left. He took off normally and the second time he peeled out like there was a fire. That was right after the call to the police.

22. I have had a car or truck sitting on my street every day for months
Usually for several hours at a time. Ever since I hosted Cindy Sheehan at my place for a rally. I've spoken at a couple anti-war events since and also gone to some vigils but I don't think of myself as any kind of radical force. I'm not even as outspoken as many others so I've been thinking that I HAVE been drunk for being so suspicious.

Every single day. Even my kids notice them now since it's so wierd.

Your post though gives me some pause for thought....

On top of this wiretapping thing, now I dunno. Maybe there is more surveillance going on than we have ever believed possible. I will say that if they are surveilling people like me however, they really don't have anything better to do. I can think of others who are much more subversive, persuasive, and dynamic with real abilities to lead a counter-protest movement that would be far more worthy of their time and attention.

59. We make a point of waving every time we pass
My older daughter will feign taking their picture as we pass but we almost always acknowledge them in some way.

I would think that some of them are broken down but there are always people in those cars and trucks!

I have a good 1/2 mile of empty road North and South of my house so it's pretty obvious when a car is sitting on the side of the road - they can't possibly be "waiting" for anyone else. There isn't anyone else living on this road.

I am in a solidly red district (Henry Hyde is my congressman). I used to be wierded out and suspicious but for my kids' sakes we laugh and wave.

Now I wonder if I should be more careful especially reading some of the other responses. We DID have our tax returns mysteriously NOT get to the IRS (I'm the owner of a corporate farm and we file quarterly - we finally mailed them certified and registered receipt). We DO have mysterious clicks on the phone line. Most bizarre of all, all three of my home computers were infected with a virus on the exact same day, disabling the modems on all of them even though I have the most up-to-date virus and firewall software (I am an internet freak, emailing reps, contacts and bloggers daily). Democratic Underground is just a fraction of my emailing/internet repertoire as it is....

I know for a fact you can tap lines without clicks, and its actually easy enough that a lot more people can do it than the government. The think is that you can't make the mistake that these people are from, or fully supported by the government. That's why its important to call the cops, get pictures, etc. And everybody whose been through this is so not alone!!!

When I lived in the city, two guys sat in a car in front of my corner rowhouse for hours one night. I called the cops, who showed up and rousted them. They turned out to be FBI who were doing surveillance (not very competently) on somebody down the side street who'd just gotten out of prison.

38. Elliott Smith believed he was being followed
Not to change the subject, but to point our someone famous who shared your perspective. The late singer Elliott Smith believed, in the last year of so of his life, that he was being followed by a couple of men in suits in a white van. Now, Elliott was in pretty poor mental health, but his friends we surprised to note, after he made this claim, that they too noticed the white van. Smith was not a very political writer, although his snogs hinted at a social conscience and he majored in politics in college. He didn't have alot of personal enemies. Was it the government, for some reason, prioritizing famous people with followings for some reason? This would have been in 2002 or 2003. I got the story from the bio "Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing".

111. It could have been private detectives, of course
This is probably the most likely scenario - they were sent by the record label or someone else who was concerned with him to see how badly he was doing. Come to think of it, I think this was his theory, that it was the record label.

They had us staked out too. I got up early one morning before dawn and there was a suv across the street, concerned about the neighborhood kids going to school I went out to it, taking its tag number down first, approaching it ,he rolled down the window, telling him of my concern and that I was calling the sheriffs office, he flashed a private investigator badge and said the sheriffs office had been notified of his surveillance, well I came and went as usual throughout the day and about 2 pm. he was still there, turns out he's battery had died running the video camera pointed at my front door, for what I don't know, maybe because I have found out about colloidal silver? I don't know, but whatever their afraid of, its their fear. Peace

53. While I'm Not Saying It Isn't * and co., other reasons on here are more
likely.

And maybe more serious: burglars staking out a house, a pedophile, private investigator, etc.

But calling the cops, taking pics, writing down plates will probably run whoever it is off!

I was convinced last summer that there was someone surveilling me, but it turned out he was waiting for his wife who was in an Abstract office at the end of my street.

If it is * and co., I agree with posters who say that surely they have better things to do with their time, unless you are someone who needs monitoring ;)

96. if you get bored with caring about it/them, you could play them
for example, borrow/otherwise acquire a playboy centerfold and tape it in a window facing their direction. Keep moving past the window mooning them, but being sure that your face doesn't show (so you don't provide them with photographic evidence linking your ID to the moon. Forgive me, I don't mean to be offensive to you, but to them, and with the conservative tendency to start giggling when sex becomes part of a situation and think that they've discovered something significant, there are rare opportunities here... Whatever you do (walk by same window flipping bird or picking nose - EVERY time) keep it light (on yourself) and tight (for yourself). Give them nothing if you can avoid it, and exploit any mistakes they make to the fullest. Enjoy your own political action, live, in your neighborhood. Should you discover either via the police or other means that this was some flavor of surveillance, immediately post here (and keep kicking it), and also alert your hometown media.

71. You might be worrying for nothing. Here's what the guy was probably doing
He was casing someone out but not you. Probably waiting for someone to pull out of a driveway way down the street but within safe viewing distance from where he was parked in front of your house. I doubt he'd have his dome light on if he was casing your place out or trying to intimidate you. Anyway, after he waited 40 minutes, he drove down the street to make sure he hadn't somehow missed his intended car coming out of the target's driveway earlier. So he drove by their place, made sure the car was still in their garage or driveway, then returned by your house to wait for that car to pull out. The car pulled out and he drove after it like a bat out of hell so he wouldn't lose it at a red light. He might have been a suspicious husband or even a private detective waiting for one of your neighbor's boyfriends down the street to pull out of their driveway and follow him to get the scoop on him.

81. I'll bet that it is. Be on your toes, but don't go worrying too much
I'm sure lots of people do things like that which get perceived the wrong way. Have you ever driven real slowly around an unfamiliar neighborhood looking for a certain residence at dusk but it's so hard to see the house numbers that you have to slow down and sometimes even stop and walk part way up to someone's door just to read the number on their house? Then you turn around and go back to your car, get in, and continue down the street driving very slowly again looking for the correct house? Well how do you think that gets perceived by someone who's watching you from windows in that neighborhood? Even though you're just looking for a number, it could look like you're scouting the neighborhood for the wrong reason. Like if you happen to be driving very slowly by a house where someone just wrote an article similar to yours, they might be suspicious of you, too.

Don't let the article you wrote get the best of you. I highly doubt that anyone who's offended by your article would park by your place for 40 minutes and just sit there. I think it's a coincidence.

Maybe he was a snoop, but who cares? What can he do, arrest you for your thoughts and opinions? If that is what they plan to do, then they better have prisons large enough to hold 100 million people.

I wouldn't worry too much. If you see him again, call the police, then get your neighbors and go out to greet him and ask him what the HELL he is doing in your neighborhood. Maybe he is a detective looking for real criminals?

I think they would be a little more covert than to just blatantly park a black SUV in front of your house. Spying means being covert. Why a black SUV? why not a beat-up honda. That wouldn't arouse much suspicion. I mean the real spies arnen't stupid, I'm sure they have figured out that black SUVs and black helicopters are easily recognizable.
