Simplicity
I just want to put this in the simplest of terms.

They hate us for our freedoms.

The freedom they hate most is freedom of speech.
It is our free speech which forms the bond of common purpose
Free Speech is the Shield and Spear of freedom
Spying is the antithesis of free speech

Fear and intimidation are the rational result for a population expecting its every word and though to be intercepted and analyzed by a Government enamored of itself to the point of hubris. In an atmosphere of fear how can free speech exist? It can not.

They hate us for our freedoms.
