CWisdom has it that Saddam killed his son-in-law, and that his two sons were thugs. But, how do we know that just isn't propaganda? Besides, just as in our country, we have what many people consider peculiar ideas (state-sponsored killing of certain prisoners), government-ordered hits on heads of state, kidnapping of heads of state, etc., in the context of societal mores in Iraq, how do we know that these two young men were really any different?

I don't doubt they were spoiled and maybe even mean and vicious. After all, we know the names of a couple of brothers from a prominent family here, and they aren't exactly filled with the milk of human kindness.
After all, if one of them hadn't wanted Quesay & Uday murdered, they'd still be alive.

So, I think we ought to be a little more circumspect about how we characterize and condemn people we really know little about.

8. He cared about the second son because,

from what I read, Saddam was/is a meglomaniac and his primary concern was his belief in his "glorious legacy." Which was why he was building all those monuments to himself. The first son was supposed to be his inheritor as dictator, but proved to be too out of control with too much of a vicious temper to even think straight, so Saddam had focused on the second one to carry on his regime.

I would guess Saddam had/has a gangster mentality which means narcissism and total fixation on himself and on his second son, as the object that would carry on his "greatness."

Like another poster on an earlier thread said, I doubt he is too overcome with grief over those two.

I don't think Saddam had what we would consider a normal paternal feeling toward these two. First off, neither of them were as wily as the old man, and you can bet old Saddam knows they were a couple of goofballs, but in their part of the world, blood connections count and he could keep an eye on them by letting them run amok.

Second, if he isn't thinking: "well, if you two were stupid enough to be together and to be found out, then you better go down with the ship and not be taken alive, or I'll have you killed myself if you are."

But then too, there is that streak of revenge that seems to run deeply in some of these families, so if there is payback, it could get brutal.
