Dean to help Boswell; no strings attached
The presidential candidate says he does not expect the Iowan to endorse him.

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean said Tuesday he will raise money for Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell's re-election campaign, with no expectation of an endorsement by the sought-after Iowan.

Dean said the solicitation for Boswell contributions, sent in a mass e-mail Tuesday, was the first step in his pledge to help Democrats win back Congress, not payment in advance for an endorsement by Boswell.

"Leonard said he's going to remain neutral. He'll remain neutral. We're not doing this to get Leonard Boswell's endorsement," Dean said in a telephone interview while campaigning in central Iowa.

Boswell said Tuesday he agreed to accept contributions with no strings attached.

"All of them would like to have me endorse. I can safely say I've been asked by all" of the presidential candidates, he said.

He said Dean told him about the possibility of the fund-raising effort for him on a recent visit to Des Moines. "He said I want you to understand I have no expectations and said I'd like to have you with me, but this is not conditional," Boswell said.
