If Harry Truman were running for President....?
Which candidate would he most resemble? Harry was not a tall guy. He had a way of plain-speaking that rubbed some people the wrong way. The establishment was not real fond of his political views. But Harry was a fighter - he would hit back. Although he supported a national healthcare system, he was not a liberal Democrat. But Harry connected with the grassroots and won the election. He connected with the people.

1. Kucinich
It's a testament to how far to the right this country had swung that what I just said is true.

2. Superficially- He Most Resembles Dean....
It's hard to compare politicians from different eras because they had different challenges...

For instance, Harry Truman was hawkish on defense.....

that all the candidates need to do-is to tell the truth on the Republicans until it feels like h*ll!

5. Harry had a Will Rogers sense of humor.
He said something like, "If the Republicans quit lying about the Democrats, I'll quit telling the truth about the Republicans." Now, that is funny and true.

4. Sure, Truman was great but
he wouldn't have a chance today.

Its a whole different world and the media has grown into a monster. Imagine what they would do with the fact that he had been in the KKK in Missouri as a young man? How about the fact that he was the Grand Master of Masons in his home state (another "secret" society, all of HST's secret service guards had to be Masons so they could be present in Lodge meetings with him)? How about his failed businesses, or his connections with the political bosses on his way up?

Okay, so he did save Europe with the Marshall Plan, was the very first head of state to recognise Israel, did halt Communist expansion in Korea, did oversee the start of NATO, the UN and all the rest.

He almost lost his campaign against Dewey despite wearing the mantle of winning WWII. Today, he'd be lucky to get as far as Graham did in the race.

Times change...
