Would the French Work Better with Dean?
Here's an article from today's Washington Post in which Dean outlines his foreign policy. Some of his statements sound strangely familiar to a candidate running in 2000....A candidate that promised to have an all-star team.

My democrat friends, are we electing a president or a team to make foreign policy decisions?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A62184-2003Dec13.html

Though Dean has repeatedly criticized Bush for failing to win international support for the Iraq war, for instance, in June 1998 he defended Clinton's bombing of Iraq by arguing on the Canadian program, "I don't think we could have built an international coalition to invade or have a substantial bombing of Saddam."

During another 1998 appearance on the show, "The Editors," Dean said it wasn't worth trying to woo the French support on foreign policy initiatives. "The French will always do exactly the opposite on what the United States wants regardless of what happens, so we're never going to have a consistent policy," he said.

Asked about the comment, Dean said he now thinks that because the French "have seen how bad things can get with the United States, they might respond to a new president who's willing to offer them respect again."

PARIS (Reuters) -- The appearance of former U.S. President Bill Clinton signaled the end of third seed Andre Agassi's French Open dreams in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Clinton threw his support behind Agassi after arriving on Centre Court at the end of the opening set, with the American leading home favorite Sebastien Grosjean 6-1.

7. i didn;t say they hated him
but , as the article said, they did the opposite of what the US did.

isn't that why BC couldn't get UN backing for kosovo?

10. The French go their own way
quite frequently on foreign policy. That's not the same thing as saying they didn't get along with or didn't like BC. They certainly did and do.

13. Except that Dean supported Bush making the war decision
instead of Congress making the decision. He supported a resolution put forth by Biden and someone else that was an alternative to the resolution that passed. The resolution that Dean supported did not require Congress making the decision to go to war with Iraq; it merely required Bush filing a statement on oath about why he's going to war with Iraq. But it still left the decision and the timing entirely up to Bush.

But France would probably prefer anyone over Bush at this point.
