<snip>
The Dec. 6 attack on Bremer's convoy was not reported at the time, but a U.S. spokesman said Friday it had occurred on the same day Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld was visiting the Iraqi capital.

"As you can see, it didn't succeed," Bremer told reporters Friday during a visit to Basra, Iraq's second-largest city.

1. It would have been a disaster for them, that's why.
News like that could only come out AFTER the Saddam capture. The military is notoriusly famous for Media control on the battlefield, please watch "Good Morning Vietnam".

9. My sentiments exactly.
I believe nothing that this administration tells me. If they lie about the big things, why trust them to tell the truth on the mundane?

4. I assume the story was about to be leaked.
They didn't want us to know that things are sill so dangerous in Iraq. They only released the story when they absolutely had to.

6. I think that's right.....
Some reporter had picked up the story. They had no choice but to confirm it.

Soldiers talk. Spread rumors. Phone home. It's hard to keep secrets very long.

5. makes me wonder what else is happening that is not being reported?
If they did not report that possible assassination of Paul Bremer, I wonder if everything is as "quiet" as it seems since the capture?

7. Oh, lots of stuff.
Refer back to Vietman. My Lai comes in loud and clear in my memory. Reading a little history will bring back a lot more, especially if you were around in those days. What is now accepted as history was not what we were getting on the news and I do remember what the news was saying.

8. Thanks Kentuck--was just going to post
... a version of this question on a thread over in Latest News. It's damn weird. I'm in danger of thinking there's NO conspiratorial explanation unless someone comes up with a convincing one soon. All I can come up with is, this came out belatedly and the media found it newsworthy. It is weird, but I can't really come up with a good paranoid explanation for it.

10. The "H" word was creeping back into the news again..
That Halliburton story was crawling back on bloody stumps, even after Karl cut the legs out from under it.
