Don't be fooled by Bush's plan for Moon Base
It's called for by "The Project for a New American Century"
The plan is to base the military in space and deny it's use by anyone else.
http://www.newamericancentury.org/
Look at
"Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century" in Publications and Reports.

Direct link if it works is
http://www.newamericancentury.org/RebuildingAmericasDefenses.pdf

Start reading from page 54. It calls for US military control of space.

If you want to know the plans of this admin and what they will do next just read this report. They have followed it verbatum.

Invade Iraq - Done
Pull out of ABM treaty - Done
Build missle defense - In progress
Pull out of other treaties (ie Kyoto) - Done
Eliminate defensive weapons (ie Crusader) - Done
Change Military from defensive to rapid offensive force - In the process

1. Bush, Sr. also tried this...
... and at the time, 1989, the cost to establish a moon base was estimated to be $400 billion, and was abandoned for that reason. Today, that cost would likely be half a trillion or more.

Fits nicely into a program to pump further money into the aerospace industry, bust the budget, and further demands from the right wing to shrink domestic social programs.

I'm all for exploration--after basic needs are met. It was mostly for budgetary reasons (and the Challenger accident) that NASA determined that remote sensing would be cheaper and equally effective for science purposes, hence the use of orbiters and small rovers on Mars, for example.

3. Should have known it was all part of PNAC's master plan
It seemed might suspicious when I heard it. Wanted to know where he thought he was going to get the money. Figured he was going to privatize the moon.

5. I am so confused...
I'm a total geek, and the notion of going to the moon and mars excites me.

But I really hate GWB, and the thought of him proposing it totally sickens me.

I just know he's going to mess it up somehow.

I'm blowing a fuse here...
