Windows Update problems?

Last night Microsoft released 30 updates or so, which I installed automatically. Since then, images have stopped displaying properly - everywhere I go I see red exxes. Anyone else have this problem? It isn't a cache problem.

Never, ever, ever install Windows updates until at least a couple weeks after they are released. You'll see bug reports cropping up and know which ones to avoid.

I say this from experience and having invented new curse words from the times when I updated servers with sloppy crap from MS.

I haven't experienced any problems so far. I didn't install the Outlook Express update because I refuse to use OE, but I can't imagine that being the problem.

From the problem you describe, it sounds like the new update created a conflict of some sort with your video drivers. Can you get an update for those?

I've only noticed the problem in conjunction with web browsers - both IE and Mozilla. Sometimes images appear, othertimes they don't.

Well, that wouldn't be a video driver. :-)

Come to think of it, I did have a weird problem with a couple sites I go to every day. They just weren't displaying correctly. I didn't experience an X's, but certain parts of the pages were "blanked out" by a white box.

It didn't occur to me it might be an issue with the Windoze updates, and I should say I was unable to recreate the problem when I tried those same pages just now. So, I dunno.

If so then you're not downloading them. Check your IE settings because there's one about dowloading images after the page text.

8. I just did 5 updates to XP

an hour ago and have no problems. One was Outlook 6 SP1.

install updates, or programs with anti-virus software running, especially Norton, or as I like to call it, "The PC Death" software.

the issue is the user.dat and the system.dat file. See norton protects files like that from bad software from being installed. The problem is when norton doesn't know the difference between what is bad and what is good. depending on the security settings used in norton a bad install could occur. Applications do things like register dll's, dynamic link libraries into the registry and the windows system32 directory. If norton blocks any part of that then flakey stuff starts to happen. Its just a good rule of thumb to turn off all anti-virus before installing anything.

Using Mac OS X, I also have updates which appear in the Prefernece are, aptly named Software Updates, There's a list of the new stuff, like Java version whatever, Imove blah blah, stuff for an iPod version I don't have--the main point is that Mac useers can click on which updates we actually need and go from there. That way I know what's going on.

But 30 all at once? :wow: sounslike some seriously sloppy programming at Redmond..or is it India now? :eyes:

Don't even begin to compare Microsoft with OSX. I never had anything like this go wrong using OSX. XP works great when it works, but when it stops working you're really screwed.

Half my machine at home is loaded up with this crap. I never update at work, though, of course update other protections, and haven't had a single problem. I wonder why, when the machine at work works just as hard as the one at home? Dumb luck?
