2. Both equally, although Rock's delivery sometimes irks me...
...sometimes Rock's screechy, wailing tirades get to me. I don't like to be yelled at, no matter how hysterical the messenger is.

Plus, Chappelle seems much more casual and off the cuff to me. Rock tends to repeat lines over and over either in his routines or in interviews. I like a little more spontaneity with my comedy.

However, both men have made me laugh probably just as much.

3. Chris Rock
Though Dave Chapelle is Chris Rock 2. Both started out as stand up comics, had small roles in many movies, then came out made and starred in their own movie. (CB:4 and Half Baked) Then got their own show(Chris Rock Show and Chapelle's Show both very similar in format, the only thing different is Chris Rock had guests he would interview) with the same co-writer(Bryan Tucker, though both shows have many co-writers). I see them as very similar but have different styles. But I had to go with Chris Rock.

5. Both funny.
Rock's HBO special Bigger and Blacker vaulted him into the elite of the standup comics, IMO. Right up there with Carlin, Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Kinison. (Eddie Izzard should be in that group, but he needs more USA exposure...)

Chapelle comes off as more likeable than the usual standup. He's got an easy delivery, and the kind of presence that would make people want to listen to him, no matter what he's talking about. His show on Comedy Central is probably one of the funniest sketch comedies ever on TV. It's consistantly one of the highest quality, best written, funniest shows. I just recently caught his show that guest-starred Wayne Brady, and was screaming with laughter.

So, yeah. Both are hilarious. Chris Rock is probably the better standup, but only barely. Chapelle is probably better at sketch comedy, and playing characters.

6. Sketch Comedy and Stand-up comedy is very similar
In Stand-up you tell a story that is funny, in sketch comedy you use visuals to tell that story. Both Rock and Chappelle are great at both but the ideas that they use for stand-up or a skit comes from the same part of the brain.

7. As much as I love Chris Rock, I have to say that Chapelle is hipper
Chapelle is the one pushing the envelope now, Rock is still funny but Chapelle is the one that is tackling more important topics.

I enjoyed Never Scared but I think that Rock is past his prime while Chapelle is just starting to hit his.

9. Personally I think Chris Rock hasn't hit his prime yet
He's already completed Stand-up, his own show(How not to get your ass kicked by the police was one of the funniest skits I ever seen), and starring in movies(that aren't that great but funny but will get much better at that and can't wait when they do). I say their pretty equal but Chris Rock is not past his prime, I don't think he reached it yet(Same with Chappelle). That show has really helped him jumpstart his career, I think Chris Rock could've really jumped start his career if his show was on basic cable(Like Comedy Central) instead of HBO. Though give some credit to their co-writers, they are funny as well.

10. Salon ran a very good CR feature over the weekend
I fucking adore Chris Rock!!

April 17, 2004 | "America is a nation of B and C students."

True to the name of his new HBO special, "Never Scared," Chris Rock is pacing the stage, explaining his take on, of all things, affirmative action.

"But let's keep it fucking real, OK? A black C student can't run no fucking company. A black C student can't even be the manager of Burger King. Meanwhile, a white C student just happens to be the president of the United States of America!"

Chris Rock is back.

And his timing couldn't be better. With an increasingly messy war in Iraq and a contentious election year under way, who better than Rock to slay the sacred dragons roaming around unchecked? He never minces words. He nails every joke. He tackles the stickiest subjects without self-consciousness or self-importance, and delivers his punch lines with the percussive conviction of a master orator. Only Rock can conquer a controversial topic with an insolent remark and a wide-eyed grin, only he can unravel the conventional wisdom on drugs or race relations with one well-chosen metaphor.

Best of all, as outspoken as he is, Rock delights in the absurdity of American life, taking pleasure in underscoring the greed, inequality and hypocrisy he observes. The Candyman of outrage, Rock turns bitterness into rollicking laughter, and takes the subjects that confuse and sadden us the most and spins them into pure entertainmen

Hands down. Dave's sense of humor annoys me sometimes. Although Chris Rock's last HBO special didn't exactly bring down the house.

13. love em both
but Dave's style appeals to me more. I'd love it if he did another HBO stand up show. I thought Killin' em Softly was one of the best in the last five years.

A little more human, acccessible. Chapelle can be funny, but his stuff is sometimes so crass and obvious I feel it must be directed at 12 year olds. Apparently, he likes his drugs because he spends an inorddinate amount of time on them. I did my share when I was younger, but even then, I wasn't that consumed with them, and now I don't have much interest in pot or crack humor...
