16. who knows what Bob is?

He's an enigma! Probably not a conservative, but not an orthodox liberal either.

14. There's a Funny Story about that
In 1965, Dylan was asked whether he would do commercials. He said, "maybe women's undergarments." It was taken as a joke.......

26. Love his music, but I wish he'd shut the hell up about
politics in general. Why he thinks we'd care what he thinks is beyond me.

Conservative Socialist.

8. well he would like conserve former-half 20th century British culture
also, remember that big uproar surrounding his appearance on stage draped in a union jack flag? before a crowd of skinheads? and a backdrop of skinhead iconography? and that song "Bengali in Platforms" where he sang, to critics and fans chagrin, "life is hard enough when you belong here?"

he's an odd sort.

12. AFAIK the consensus on that song is that it's written in character
not sure why I've taken on the role of Morrissey defender, but here goes. Morrissey is a deeply ironic guy who can't make any comment, statement or pose without a huge knowing wink. He's certainly no racist, I'd say he falls into the classic British role of curmudgeon and deliberate contrarian. From what I've heard of people who have met him, he's shockingly ordinary and reasonable in 'real' life.

13. oh, of course he's no racist
still, he is a conservative inasmuch as he DOES seem to feel thrown to the wayside by the 'touching march of time' as it were. plus the Smiths WERE somewhat reactionary in their time.

7. Uhhhh...
I can't think of one, except Michigan's Scourge of Barely-Pubescent Females, Theo Nugent. I am afraid if it wasn't for his schtick, he would be running a bait shop in Da' U.P., cause his music has gone from suck to really, really, really suck.

So, who else, besides Toby Keith(R-Drunken Redneck Anacephalic) do we have?

"Saturday Night Special" was anti-handgun, which is a statement even most Southern Democrats wouldn't make.

19. He also supported Perot. He's all over the place.
He's a guy you should never ask for political advice from. I have no idea what his true beliefs are, apart from his clear environmentalism.

21. No, he didn't. He's still a Canadian citizen.
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 10:06 AM by Bridget Burke
Here's a fairly recent Rolling Stone interview:

Q: The other night, you ended "Rockin' in the Free World" with military funeral music -- a feedback quote from "Taps."

A: That's for the soldiers who die in Iraq every day, because of this stupid plan that the administration didn't have. They didn't know what the hell was going to happen. Bush makes Clinton look like sandpaper -- that's how slippery he is. A lot of people in this country obviously think President Bush is a great leader. If they're happy, they should vote to keep him in office. But if you're not happy, you should also go and vote. Everybody has a right to their opinion, only now it's at the risk of not being patriotic. And you might wonder what difference it makes to me, being a Canadian citizen.

Q: That's my next question.

A: I have an American family: three American children and an American wife. I pay taxes. I do everything other citizens do, except I'm not allowed to serve on juries, vote or serve in the military. That gives me a right to say whatever I feel like saying.

Neil's not an easy one to pin down.

Why bother keeping the passport? He's become as American as anyone.

(ok, that wasn't too serious)
It's a little strange when a guy makes himself so much a part of American culture and has so much to say about it, but remains a foreign national. I'm sure he has perfectly respectable reasons, but it always struck me as strange.
On edit - OK, I'm being too harsh on the guy.

reprehensor is a huge Neil fan, and read another interview years ago where Neil ad said he was supporting Reagan. But I think he definitely saw the light not long after.
