In 1989 I was stationed at the Commander In Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor. As Earth Day was approaching, my division was asked for volunteers to participate. I agreed. I thought it would be great for community relations, giving the community a positive view of the U.S. Navy.
Earth Day came, and I received my assignment: pulling weeds.
Pulling weeds inside a base that civilians did not have access to.
I spent a couple of hours pulling weeds and hated it. I could have been involved in a recycling project, or maybe out in the community picking up trash. Those would have been good Earth Day activities. Does pulling weeds qualify as an Earth Day activity?
