I have to know where this came from
I have posted twice, and had extremely unusual results. The post works, but I get a strange message; the last one being:

Following query failed:
INSERT INTO 105_mesg_archive VALUES('1048038', '1044988', '1045274', '0', '0', '140880', 'jakefrep', '20040422231055', '', '20040422231055', '', '00000000000000', 'I saw a sign at an RTA stop in Cleveland...', '\"OE\'s the name, 8-ball\'s the game!\"\r\n\r\nOE 800 was the official beverage of our dorm-room Blaxploitation Film Festival.', '', 'on', 'off', 'off', '0', '0', '', '0', '0', '0', '0', '0' )

What the hell is that all about?

7. Okay, thanks
It just seems odd that totally unrelated, and possibly obnoxious words appear when one wants to post a simple message.

Still waters run deep? What the hell is under there?

Maybe I don't want to continue to post here. This is ignorant.

16. More info....

It's an SQL command. The general format is 'Insert into {tablename} values (val1, val2, etc) WHERE {condition of insert}, so the command is asking the backend system to insert a message into the archive and is using the message itself and other things as parameters.

The numbers look like sequence numbers, no real problem there, everything needs an ID or two, the message being entered was...I saw a sign blah blah... OE's the name, 8-balls the game!.. and so on. The \ characters denote special characters in SQL, so \" actually includes the " because it isn't valid without the control character in an SQL command. \r and \n are special too. The rest of it looks like switches.

Since you aren't jakefrep, this message was probably misrouted. Thats not so bad, given there are what 42000 members and heaps on line all the time, this stuff happens (secure comms are different, but on unsecure comms this stuff can happen)

If this is freaking you out, don't look too far into how the internet works, you'll never use it again if you really knew!!

It would appear there is tension in the thread because there are different levels of understanding about what this message is, and maybe some paranoia because this whole police state thing is new to citizens of the US.

Peace

21. I have no unjustified paranoia
and no tension.

I asked for information, and thank you for providing it.

I never "freak out"

I do, however, wonder why the hell I get extremely odd pages listed when all I did was post.

If it doesn't happen to you, that's great.

If it does, It would hopefully create some questions in your mind as well.

Thanks for the information. I still don't really know why it happened.

27. without any knowledge of the DU system....
I can make some general comments as to why this happened.

The general deal is, when each of us hits the du pages, we are allocated a socket that our pc's use to communicate to the server that du is hosted on.

So, if there are currently 10000 users viewing pages, the system holds 10000 sockets open, to talk back to individual users (there are other ways of doing this, but I'm trying not to write a book here). So lets say that you have socket 1000 and I have socket 1001. In binary these are 1111101000 and 1111101001 respectively. If some little gremlin gets in, it's concievalbe that the 0 at the end of your number will become a 1, thus messages intended for you may be routed to me, because the system thinks that I am the intended recipient.

Since this only happened once in this instance, it's most likely transient, in that the data for that message got mixed up, not the data in general. That would tend to indicate the error was not really a bug per say, but more likely some randon condition that got through the standard error checking mechanisms.

These things can be caused by all sorts of things, due to the tolerances inside the actual silicon doing the computing (we're way down inside the machine at this point) For example, somebodies malfunctioning cell phone may have run near the server, or maybe some solar radiation caused the slight change, these things can happen.

If it's easily reproducable, it's a bug. Some things that go weird from time to time, are more likely to be just transient 'accidents' or complex bugs that are hard to reproduce due to the interaction of many systems, both hardware and software.

30. Thanks
but it didn't only happen once. It happened every time that I posted.

Bugs are bugs.

My only question was what the fuck was that what I saw and where did it come from?

I know, no answers.

I give up trying to find out where this "bug" came from or why. All I am getting are responses telling me that it happened.

That doesn't answer the question.

However, thanks for the response.

33. We'll get there.....
Well, we know what it was, it was an insert command.

It looks as though it came from a post (or attempted post) from jakefrep, who is a DU'er who is currently online. The way you may have recieved it I have described.

As for it happening every time you tried to post, that would likely happen if an error occured, and would continue to happen until that socket is reset (once the socket was in an error condition it would most likely stay that way until something reset it, for example closing and restarting a browser, or logging out/in)

Other than that, you would need to get a response from whomever has access to the logs and such to really nail it.

So, since you've posted in the bugs forum, it's probably just a matter of waiting for a response. Hopefully the information you have so far at least gives you an idea of what's possible and/or likely to have occurred.

13. You know, as far as I know, the word "blaxploitation"
is a legitimate "genre term" for certain flicks from the seventies, like Shaft -- not generally considered offensive, as far as I know.

Am I correct here, or wrong?

....In case that was what got your goat.

typing in a simple post and getting this weird bullshit. I had to use the back button repeatedly to get back to DU, and at first didn't even know whether or not my post was posted.

20. If you don't like not understanding something...
instead of acting all accusatory and saying "this is bullshit" "I'm not gonna post here anymore", try asking politely, or failing that, go to the library and take out a book or 3 on how SQL databases work.

It's not witchcraft at wotk here, it's just a bug in the database.

These guys are not admins (are they?) and thus without looking at the logs of the database, they will most likely never be able to give you an exact answer.
Eureka gave you a very good answer that is in all probability is very close to what happened.

25. okay
however, I have not had this ignorant crap happen anywhere else, and still have not received an answer to the original question.

Where did this come from?

If it's placed on my screen, I would like to know where it came from?

Is that such a fucked up question to ask?

The only answers I have so far are it is a glitch, don't worry about it.

I'm not worried, believe me, I'm not worried.

However, I still have no answer. I am accepting that I won't.

Something just happened. Don't worry about it.

Well it came from the DU database. It was not intended for you, and as such was an accident (possibly a bug). See Eureka's post #27 for a good explanation.

28. Old English 800 the official blaxploitation film festival drink?
Sounds fun. Anyone remember TJ Swan? Made three flavors of "wine," Mellow Days, Easy Nights, and Steppin Out.

Blaxploitation films made black culture cool for lame ass white dudes. Remember Lou Reed, " wanna be black?" Lou was too cool or blaack chic.

Then there were the blaxploitation genre comedies, "I'm gonna get you, sucka" comes to mind. Thats a good movie to go with OE800.

35. I don't see why its ignorant.
I mean, admittedly some of us don't take the issue of your mysterious message as seriously as you do, and though you don't come right out with it, you also seem to think its horrifyingly racist, which I do not. So, it may be true that the above poster and myself do not share your interpretation of the message, and do not share your ever so serious and pompous attitude, preferrng to respond with humor, nevertheless, that does not make us ignorant. You should try to refrain from labelling people as ignorant simply because they fail to share your viewpoint. I certainly don't think its ignorant to be aware of the hangover inducing qualities of OE800, I am glad to learn it, lest I fall victim to my temptation to emulate the OE800 guzzling blaxploitation film festival party motif. Its not racist, I love studying and comparing film genres. You should have been there at my Melanie Griffith film festival, we screened "Cherry 2000," "Working Girl," and some other movie I was too far gone to appreciate. The beverage of choice was anything that would get you smashed enough to get over the sphincter-puckering, horrifying effects of her moronic high-pitched whining. It was a blast. Just as I suspect an OE800 fueled blaxploitation film fest would be a blast. Robert Townsend certainly thought those movies were funny, as also evidenced by the evil pimp scene from "Hollywood Shuffle."
