take her to the vet immediately and have her kidneys checked. Happened to one of our cats and she was down to 4lbs. before we realized it.

Her kidneys were failing, but with medical care and giving her sub-q fluids, she was able to be with us a good year or so after she got sick.

It's a form of liver failure, and it's deadly if untreated. My sister's cat has gone through this twice--she put herself on little hunger strikes when subjected to changes in her routine, and the rapid weight loss brought on the hepatic lipidosis.

Get her to a vet NOW.

8. My cat had a thyroid problem

and lost a lot of weight in about a one month period. Her symptoms were rapid panting, and excessive intake of water. I ended up having her treated with a radioactive isotope which completely cured her. Now, three years later and 15 years old, she's just fine except for her arthritis which I treat with liquid glucosamine, a miracle drug. Take your cat to the vet right away. Good luck.

My 16 yr old cat lost 3 pounds in a very short time about a year ago. Turns out it was dehydration and an overactive thyroid. She's on a simple thyroid medication and her weight has stabilized.

My wife, the cat person, says it's likely either cancer or worms. Depends on how quickly and how much.

She'll be home in four or five hours, and will be able to answer more then.

If he's eating normally and his fur is fine, it's likely worms, she says. If he's not eating or drinking properly, or his fur is stiff, spiky, or dry looking, it could be cancer, feline leukemia, or something else bad. She strongly recommends a vet visit.

some are serious, some are not. Only a thorough exam by a vet can narrow it down for you, they are the experts. I could come up with 2 pages of things it could be, I would probably be wrong.
