Poll question: May/December romances
This is one of the touchier subjects in the gay community, and I assume it is to some extent in the straight community, as well. What is your opinion?

:)

3. It's sad that we still seem to be a community more interested in what
everyone else is doing instead of looking inward at our own living rooms.

4. I agree.
The 1st thing that goes through my mind when I see ANY happy couple isn't how old they are, but---- how HAPPY they are. Maybe I'm a freak...:)

9. don't mind as long as it isn't exploitative
From the straight perspective, some women feel like men are always looking for the fountain of youth and I don't respect men who leave their wives for that reason. But I understand why it happens. I suppose it could also be true for older women and younger men - the statistics support this, but I haven't seen much evidence of it among people I know. On the other hand, one of my favorite movies is Harold and Maude, just because it plays with so many conventions!

I don't know how these romances are viewed in the gay community.

In the long run, I think many people may be looking for a part of themselves that is missing, So, there is MY overblown analysis ...:)

10. A long time ago...
When I was young and strong and doing time as a carpet cleaner one of my regular customers was a couple with two children. The one thing that always struck me every one of the many times I walked into their house was the overwhelming feeling of love and joy that permeated that household. The kids were always bright and happy and the couple, even after 5 years of marriage, were like newlyweds. It was obvious how much they loved each other and nobody who came within 100 yards of them could fail to be infected by their contagious joy and happiness.

She was 23 and he was 59. When they were married she was 18 and he was 54. I've never known a happier couple in all my life. And now, many years later, now that I'm 59 myself, the idea of dating a woman 23 years old seems positively ludicrous, and utter outside the realm of the possible, but somehow those two made it work.

I will envy both of them forever.

11. My daddy was 31 when he married my mam, who was 16.
They were married for 30 years, literally until death did them part, and had 14 children; they were also still deeply in love. :)

12. If they're both happy,. that's all that matters.
Happiness is such an elusive emotion. If both parties are in love, that's the only thing that matters.

And to hell with anyone who finds it "perverted" or "weird"

18. I've always wanted to post on this
I guess I did once, in my own silly way. :) I think true, mutually respectful love knows no age difference.

P.S. Padraig, do you consider you & CL's 20-26 to be May/December? It doesn't seem like much of a difference to me, just enough to be slightly exciting.:)

20. Since I'm predominantly attracted to 35+ women
I can envision myself in a relationship as such in the future.

So, no, I definitely don't have a problem with May-December romances

21. My Own June-December Romance Was A TOTAL DISASTER
Edited on Mon May-03-04 05:36 AM by arwalden
But then again... maybe it had something to do with his paranoia, insecurity, violent tendencies, alcoholism, and control issues. I suppose my cheating didn't help things either. I was such a flighty 20-something barfly.

I was young, impressionable... but... What was I thinking?? --- The other question is... What was HE thinking? There's no way in hell that I'd EVER consider having a serious relationship with someone that much younger than me... why did HE ever consider it?

And most of all... why did we let it go on for nearly 10 years. Argh! Good grief. --- All in all the whole experience contributed to the person I am today... but geeze-louise... I should have had the courage to leave sooner, but I felt trapped. I was financially dependent and emotionally codependent.

So... the answer is: "It depends on the people involved." Hopefully they are wise enough to make smart decisions.
