I'm listening to it on Rhapsody and it's the best White Stripes album by far. They actually have someone who can sing and write lyrics and music on it! Thumbs up!

1. Watch out
The country and western music haters will be flaming you in seconds.

It's Loretta Lynn's best album in years. Probably the best country album this year.

2. I bought it for my wife for mother's day.
I've never bought a contemporary country album before (except maybe an Alison Kraus or two, come to think of it). It's not just any country album. If you liked Solomon Burke's "comeback," you'll probably like Van Lear Rose. Both treat legendary artists with the respect they're due.

this is an album that deserves all the super high ratings. It's both traditional and hip.

5. saw them on Letterman
I was WTF this is weird, but it was really pretty good. There is a good article about their collaboration in the Sunday Arts section of the NYT that might be worth a look.

At first I thought the Stripes were laughing all the way to the bank ( well that may still be the case), but actually Jack White seems to be able to play and they may be the real thing, a real indie gone to the big time. Although I think my drumming is better - it is still good to see yet another female rock drummer in the "big time."

8. the drummer isn't meg white...
it's patrick keeler of wonderful cincinnati garage blues band The Greenhornes. He's much better than Meg White and I doubt you're better than he. He was the one who played with LL on Letterman last week. Jack Lawrence (also of the Greenhornes) played bass.
just fyi

10. no I was referring to Meg White in general
and no, I don't think I am anywhere near the skills of good blues drummers. That band he had on Letterman seemed really good.

6. heard LL interviewed on NPR last week -- first time I've wanted to buy
one of her albums. Not because the White Stripes, whom I'd never heard of before. Just because it sounds like a good album.
