Old Mr. Rabbit born June 1, 1911
We had my Dad over to celebrate his 93rd birthday this weekend. Also attending was my sister and her two sons, the girlfriend of one of them, my younger son, my SO and her daughter. My mother passed away two years ago; she and Dad were married for 64 years.

He graduated from high school into the Great Depression, but survived working construction jobs when he could get it and drawing sports cartoons for the local newspaper. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, he was thirty years old and married with a month-old daughter. He worked in the shipyards during the war, riding a bicycle to work to save gasoline for the war effort. After the war, he went into business as a portrait photographer. He sold the business in the early sixties, when I was 11.

He has been a lifelong liberal Democrat. His family benefited from the New Deal. He spoke out against the internment of Japanese Americans in 1942. He opposed the Vietnam War and opposes Bush's approach to the war on terror.

Dad is a moderate drinker (I have never seen him drunk). He did not have affairs. I could not have asked for a better role model.

Happy birthday, Dad.

1. Happy Birthday to Mr. Rabbit!
!!

It's great when your dad is your role model. My dad's a great guy, too. If I have half his life, I'll be lucky.

5. A Very Special Happy Birthday...
to a very special man--and a very special American!

I'd like to add a personal thank you to your wonderful dad for speaking out against the internment of Japanese Americans--it hits home for me because many of my maternal relatives were among the internees, and it was a sad, difficult time for them that they've only been able to speak of without shame recently. It wasn't easy to oppose this policy at the time, and your dad took a brave, lonely, principled stand. Please thank him for that!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. RABBIT--AND THANKS FOR A LIFE WELL LIVED!
