Are polyhydroxy aldehydes, polyhydroxy ketones or compounds that can be hydrolyzed to them. a Carbohhydrate taht cannot be hydrolyzed to simpler compuounds is a monosaccharide. A carbohydrate that can be hydrolyzed to two monosaccharide molicules is a disaccharide. If it can be hydrolyzed to many monosaccharides it is a polysaccharide.
