"The Day After Tomorrow"...for real.
Visited some relatives in Lexington, KY over the week end. On Sunday afternoon we decided to go see The Day After Tomorrow.
It's definitely a special effects movie, not long on plot (or science according to some), but I enjoyed it.

The show was about over...conflict solved, just waiting for the good guys to ride off into the sunset sort-of-thing...when the film stopped, the lights came up, and the manager came running down the aisle.

"Ladies and gentlemen, PLEASE KEEP YOUR SEATS! WE are under a tornado alert. A tornado has been spotted a few blocks away, heading down Nicholasville Road. (The theater is ON Nicholasville Road.) This is a steel reinforced concrete building and you are safer here than anywhere else you could be. Please remain in the theater. No one will be allowed to leave until the all clear."

At first we thought it was some kind of skit, or part of the performance to promote the movie. A few people said "You've GOT to be kidding." The manager said he was dead serious. "This is NOT part of the show." Many whipped out their celphones.

After about 15 minutes he told us it was OK to leave. They ran the last few minutes of the movie, and we left.
Not a spoiler, but the movie opens with some rather spectacular tornados. Talk about WEIRD.

3. That's what I thought about Western Washington
Until we got a bunch this week. They even had to write a story about how it wasn't "The Day After Tomorrow" in the newspaper to calm people.

Rare tornados don't signal disaster-movie weather shift

By PAUL QUEARY
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Washington state has already had far more than its tiny yearly ration of tornados.

But twisters here are still rare and comparatively weak, and meteorologists say there's no disaster-movie weather shift in progress to transform the Northwest's placid drizzle into the big, sometimes deadly storms of the Midwest.

Two funnel clouds touched down in Washington on Thursday, bringing the tornado total for the calendar year - and the past month - to five. That's well over the yearly average of 1.8, according to the National Weather Service.

One hit near Tenino, the other outside La Center. Both damaged barns but caused no injuries.
