Is it possible to agree with certain parts of many ideologies?
I feel the need to ask a difficult--if not heretical at DU--question:

Can I agree with some types of "conservative" ideas and still be a progressive?

For instance: I do not like the federal government having its fingers the aspects of our daily lives that would, I think, be best handled locally. Example: education---a district should decide on its own standards, and it should not have more schools than the superintendent could visit in a day. I am opposed to Bush because he seems bent on educational totalitarianism, with the eventual objective (I fear) being that education will be stripped from local control entirely and placed in the filthy little hands of private interests.

I just wonder these things sometimes.

1. Yeah and if they want to teach creationism instead of actual science, then
the devil may care *sarcasm on *

6. But the Creos are buddy-buddy with the current Administration:
so I don't put much faith in Federal science-education policy under Dubya.

2. Of course you can still be progressive.
If all Liberals agreed on everything there would not be the
in-fighting we see in our movement.

3. yes, of course
It is the sign of discriminating mind not to buy wholly a party line.

A famous author once said at a local party, "at least the neo-Nazis have philosophical consistency."

Philosophical consistency is often, of course, the hallmark of small minds (to mangle a paraphrasal).

4. Freedom, true freedom, means, among other things...
Not having to ask whether it's okay or not okay to agree or disagree with ANYTHING.

There's no one, set-in-stone definition of a progressive. Or any other kind of "ive" or "ism."

I guess I mean that, in my opinion, if we get hung up on whether we're acting like an "A" or a "B," we're denying our natural impulses to be who we are.

5. Yeah, sometimes the party line gets muddled
It would be great if we had managed to avoid political parties altogether although that idea is pretty "utopian." So long as you agree with a majority of what your party espouses, you just have to swallow what's left and realize we're not in a perfect world. I used to be a Republican but eventually I came to a point where they had crossed a certain line and left me behind. That's life; the only constant is change and you can't be afraid of it.:toast:
