1. Just send away for one of them kits on the TV!
Just kidding -- I wouldn't trust them.

I guess if I had an idea so good I wanted to patent it, I'd look for a patent attorney. Among other things, they can do a patent search for any similar existing ones far more easily than you or I can.

2. Call a reputable patent attorney.
Then give then a lot of money, 6000 to 12000 dollars and they will take it from there. Not all the money is up front, but it is very expensive.
And remember there is no guarantee you will receive a patent.

many successful patent owners are willing to consult for much less. PM me & I'll give you the name of one.

4. Go to www.uspto.gov
You can search patents there by keyword to see if anyone else had the idea. The patent is divided into two main sections. The first section is the "specification" which describes how to build the invention and should include some info on its operation, and the second part is the "claims", which use a language now used only by patent attorneys to unambiguously (though not necessarily clearly) describe the invention.

Eventually you will need an attorney to help write the patent.
