What US cities have the best public & private schools?
When I finally start my career, get married, and have a couple of kids, I want to make sure they get the best education possible... I came from a well off family, but I attended a sh*tty public high school in a small town out in the middle of nowhere. When I went to college, although all my professors thought I was an outstanding writer, I had problems in a few other subjects.

When, or if, I have kids, I don't want there to be any excuses for them not getting a good education. BTW, I also prefer to live in decent sized city.

So hit me... where are the good schools? For that matter, which state has the best overall educational system?

Peace,

1. Probably the Connecticut suburbs of NYC. That would be my guess
Could be wrong though. They've got to have the most revenue from property taxes to have good schools. I come from the Boston suburbs and those are pretty good.

2. Suburbs of Washington, D.C.: Maryland and NoVA both have excellent
public schools, among the best in the country. Also excellent "magnet" schools for science/math, etc. You won't do badly in Boston area either with both excellent public schools and a much better selection of private schools if you want to go that route.
NYC has of course some of the best public schools in the country with Stuyvesant , Brooklyn Tech and Bronx Science, but you have to test into those schools. I don't know if places like Julliard or Performing Arts are pub or private. I suspect there's a lot of bad public schools in NYC too but I wouldn't know much about it. Many outstanding prep schools around NYC too.

The good prep school route'll really cost ya though!

3. All of these cities I just mentioned are also in the most overheated
real estate markets in the country/world too, though. Good luck!

5. St. John's in Houston is excellent
First, it has the distinction of rejection Bush and his brothers as students back in the 1960s. At a college admissions seminar, one parent asked the Dean of Admissions of Yale is she was aware that St. John's had rejected Bush and she indicated that this had been a topic of conversation at dinner.

My son just graduated from St. John's. His class set a record with 78% of the class qualifying as either National Merit Semi-Finalists or National Merit Commended Students.
