I know he's an RA because we asked. I'm creeped out. Is this weird to anyone else?
I'm sorry. On edit: An RA is a Resident Assistant. They advise, patrol and assist the dorm director.

11. Not ageism...
I wouldn't think anything of it if he were the Dorm Director. But he's an RA. He lives on the floors with the Residents and assists, etc. I don't know. Now that this place is coed, I'm a little creeped out.

20. He might be a loser, he might one of the greatest guys you ever meet
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 02:33 PM by lunabush
At 50, heading back to college and financing it through being an RA? I'm guessing there is a wealth of information to learn from this guy. Some of it might be simply by not doing what he has done - who knows until you know him?

Odds are he thinks the young students are cute - but he has no designs on any of you.

3. What's an RA?
And what's unusual about 50 years old?

15. That is weird.
We didn't have RAs at my college - we had professors who lived in our dorms instead. The "house fellows."

18. That's interesting.
How long ago was this? That I would find normal too. I don't know why I find this a little weird. It's not like he's said anything or done anything inappropriate. It's just the fact that someone who could be my dad is an RA.

21. They still do it.
I only graduated 3 years ago. I think it's just something that's a tradition at my school. There are apartments for professors to live in on the first floors of the dorms. They come to special teas and stuff and talk with the students. Pretty cool actually.

I don't think the older RA thing is strange so much as unusual. There are lots of older students now.

6. And you are referring to...?
What? A Resident Assistant at a college dorm? The fact that you're "creeped out" creeps me out. WTF is wrong with someone being 50?

9. Is he an RA or is he higher up than that?
When I was in college all RA's reported to their quad director (all residence buildings were in 7 residence quads). The quad directors were usually in their 30's or 40's and lived on campus.

10. Hrm...
Oldest RA I ever knew was 24, and I dated him :D

That does seem a little weird, but if he's a student, why not? Or are they not students at your school? It works differently everywhere...

13. that is a little weird...
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 02:20 PM by LastKnight
i know ill get in some shit for sayin that its weird but... just think about it...

you go away to college to get away from your family and older people in general, and to spend more time with people your age, at least thats one of the reasons, and how would you feel if your RA was close to the age of your parents? i wouldnt like it too much.

who knows, maybe the guy is actuially pretty cool, no way to know without meeting him. so im not gonna judge him.

16. He's a nice guy.
Don't get me wrong. But if you were coming to a new school, and they told you that the RA was older than your dad, wouldn't you find that a little creepy, weird, or just plain unattractive? I mean, he's a nice guy, but still, why not just get a job as a dorm director, and let the people who are at a closer age, like 20, 22, 24?

14. Good for him
That's great that he's embracing the college experience. I wouldn't worry about it at all unless he starts loading up at the keggers. He actually sounds rather brave that he would take that role on.

19. I'm 68
But, just as concerned, if not more so, as the younger posters. I'd hate for my children and grandchildren to have to live in a fascist country.
