I have a guilty musical pleasure - I love Tears for Fears
I don't mean to let anyone down who likes my musical tastes but I just love some of their songs. Whenever I hear them I am instantly transported to those great days in the eighties when I was a kid with no responsibilities and everything was so immediate and the possibilities endless.

Ahh.........

6. I have this same reaction to much 80's music,
including TFF, ChavezSpeaksTheTruth! Are you a fan of VH1's "I Love The 80's" programme, also?

You just can't help yourself.

9. I love them too, though I must say I tend to like
their later stuff more than the early 80's stuff. Seeds of Love (such a great, great album!) and beyond. They have reformed and are on tour again btw. Have a new album out too but I haven't heard anything off it yet.

20. Hi Patrick!
Yeah, long time no see for sure! Things are pretty much the same, though I just spent a few months remodeling my house (that's why I've been scarce).

Nice to see old friends are still here! I think of you whenever I watch Conan ;-)

10. Hey! I met Roland Orzabal on a train somewhere between Germany...
... and Spain, in the spring of 1984.

I'll never forget it, because he's the one who told me that Marvin Gaye had been shot. I was in the bar car, and he approached me, "Are you American?" and then he told me. We got to chatting, and I found out who he was. He was just about the coolest guy I'd ever met, and we chatted all the way to Barcelona.

We sent each other a few letters, and later that summer, I met him backstage at a show he played stateside, at the height of their US fame. It was exhilarating.

There was always something more substantial about Tears for Fears, compared to the other, similar alt-bands of the day.

I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you 'cause I find it hard to take
When people run in circles, it's a very very mad world

16. Yes, he was looking for an American. Nobody else knew who...
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 02:41 PM by VolcanoJen
... Marvin Gaye was. He'd just heard the news, and seemed desperate to talk about it. It was one helluva conversation starter.

Those were fun days... I miss them. :-(

ON EDIT You know, I really shouldn't kiss and tell. ;-)

I ask for more and more
How can I be sure
When You don't give me love
You give me pale shelter
You don't give me love
You give me cold hands

21. That's a cool story!
yeah, they had so much more substance! For one, they didn't rely so heavily on synthesizers (a habit of 80's bands). They actually used a lot of real instruments - I love their heavy piano stuff.

45. How cool is that?
I remember hearing an interview with Roland Orzabal on Fresh Air about a million years ago -- it was around the time he released his solo album. His life story would make a great book, probably -- wasn't one of his parents a foreign diplomat?

I like the song "Closest Thing to Heaven". And, IMO "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is one of the greatest #1 songs of all time. I never get sick of it.

One of my fave albums from the early 80's...I think "Donnie Darko" kicked it into gear for me again (they did an amazing remake of "Mad World" in that movie)...

Damn, she was like, my 80's role-model. I was always one of those 80's chicks with wild hair and colorful clothes. I adored Dale, and also the exceedingly beautiful and talented Terri Nunn from Berlin...

We had so much more panache than the kids today, if you ask me... :-)

I think I saw them twice in Houston in the summer of 88 or 89. When did Seeds of Love come out? That was the tour I saw. So, good! Wow, thanks for bringing back the memories!;-)
I even think Debbie Harry opened up for them on one show!

Head Over Heels, Mad World, Woman in Chains, Sowing the Seeds of Love...great songs, all of them!

Nothing to be ashamed of either. They are a great band!

Have you seen the movie Donnie Darko, which pays a nice tribute to their music?

44. Head over Heels.
My favourite local band put that at the end of their demo for no reason. So after a distorted masterpiece of a rock song, out of nowhere comes Tears for Fears.

All five people who were listening to it simultaneously realized what it was and said "What the fuck?"
