KABUL, Afghanistan, June 2 - Five aid workers from the Dutch branch of Doctors Without Borders were shot dead Wednesday in an ambush in northwest Afghanistan as they were returning to their regional office, officials said.

The killings were another blow to the embattled aid workers in Afghanistan, who have seen 32 of their colleagues, and at least 5 other foreigners, killed since March 2003, often by Taliban and other militants intent on stalling aid and reconstruction efforts.

Hard to banter blissfully about problematic cinematic interpretations of Phillip K. Dick when good people are getting slaughtered for trying to help.

But I've been doing a fairly slow and careful study of the history of the world this past year, and I'm coming to the conclusion that good people get wasted all the time. I hate it. Don't know how to stop it. I do what I can, here and there. Too little too late? Ah, but that's the wrong attitude, innit?

Actually, I can banter blissfully in any situation, including this one, becuz I'm ultimately as cold-hearted, cyncial and self-interested as they come. But mjean-03 has probably gone off to beddy-bye land by this point.
