The "sexy librarian" look will be big this fall!!!
At last, at age 35, I will finally be in style!:bounce:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/West/06/02/modest.clothing.ap/index.html

Shoppers are starting to see higher waistlines and lower hemlines, and tweeds, fitted blazers and layers are expected to be big this fall, Schanen said.

"It's kind of like a sexy take on a librarian," she said. "I think people are tired of seeing so much skin and want to leave a little more to the imagination."

1. Forget that conservative claptrap
about leaving more to the imagination. I just like more folds of clothes around the exposed parts when I'm getting serious.

2. But dammit...
I just got to where I really liked the hip hugger jeans. Goddammit why do they do this to me all the time. Every time I find a look I can live with they decide something else is "in". I don't wanta dress like a librarian. I don't wanta wear tweed. I don't want higher waistlines that don't look good on me. ARGH!!!

8. "sexy librarian"
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 09:21 PM by cedahlia
That phrase implies that librarians are inherently unsexy. Damn those stereotypes to hell! I'm an aspiring librarian and I know I'm sexy, dammit!! Okay, I do wear the cat's eye glasses 'cause they're cute, but I don't wear my hair in a bun, and I'm not afraid to show some skin when the mood strikes. }( Rowr!!

***edited for grammer!

Yeah, you have to watch out for us librarians...we are actually a very fun, vibrant, intelligent group of people. We are certainly not the frumpy, mean gals the stereotypes would have you believe! :D

17. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
All of you, be quiet this instant!!!

Heh, amazingly, I've never actually "shushed" anybody during my library career...and I work in the children's department where it is almost never quiet. Sometimes I go upstairs and visit the adult department, which is a different world. I tell them, "wow, it actually sounds like a library up here." Meanwhile, in the distance, I hear the faint sound of screaming and howling coming from the zoo that is the children's department...
:)

23. Hey Librarians! Here's a librarian who was a hero:
The Dismissal of Miss Ruth Brown: Civil Rights, Censorship, and the American Library
by Louise S. Robbins

Review from Library Journal:

<snip>

In 1950, Miss Ruth Brown was dismissed from her job as librarian at the Bartlesville Public Library, OK, a position she had held for 30 years, ostensibly because she had circulated such subversive and communist materials as the Nation, New Republic, and Soviet Russia Today. But many believed the real reason for her firing was due to her efforts to promote racial equality.

Haven't seen it yet, but I plan on buying it. Read a review of it in Rolling Stone today that said it was good, but really intended for the most diehard fans...so it sounds like it will be right up my alley! :)

29. I was in Montreal one winter & saw a great
vid of her "Under the Pink" tour on cable, but it was never available in the US that I'm aware...

Yeah, I've been a big fan for years...

That DVD is a good price, but things have been kinda weird since she went to Sony -- a lot of other videos, etc can't be re-issued on DVD...

26. Found one, but it's NAUGHTY
i.e., not to be opened in mixed company, at work, etc.

And, no, of course I don;t look at this stuff or enjoy it, I'm just providing a public service and...oh, who am I kidding...

Adding 'jpg' to this link will stoke those latent librarian fantasies:

My God, get that kid into a makeover before she's a spinster for life.

I know that's sexist and all but really she's going out of her way to look ugly - possibly on purpose.

30. There doesn't need to be
But there does need to be "losing of the pulled-back hair," "less-modest clothing" (there is a middle ground between Britney Spears and chador, and this kid needs to find it, and fast), and "eye shadow."

28. YAY!!
I like the sexy librarian look, and I"m sick and tired of seeing young girls walking around with their stomachs and their undies showing looking like crap. Also tired of the women who SHOULDN'T be wearing such things wearing them.

Nothing wrong with a classy look, while leaving the option for half-dressing for those who a) are old enough, and b) can do it tactfully. Sadly, it seems precious few can handle (b).
