Best Matrix explaination I've seen!
check out this guys thread @ http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=38092

Major spoilers about Matrix, Reloaded, Animatrix and (possibly) Revolutions. It is a very, very interesting read and he draws some good conclusions about the Matrix and what may be the truth.

1. Ties into my theories(Spoilers)
There are no humans. They were wiped out either through war or other means. The machines were left with no purpose. Some machines burgeoning on their own sense of purpose decided that something must be done. Thus the archetect created the matrix in which some programs were made to believe they were humans. The rest of the machines were told to quell the humans and keep them in the matrix for power.

Over time an anomaly appeared. Some of the machines programmed as humans began to realise that they were machines. They would wake from the dream of being human and the system would collapse. In desperation the archetect created the oracle and used decidedly nonmachine thinking in its creation. Either analog or some other "mistake" was introduced to the oracle so that it could see the problem in a different way.

The oracle came up with the idea of Zion. When a machine was waking up they would be pulled out to another layer of the matrix and told that they were in the midst of a battle to free the other humans. These newly freed humans would then set about trying to find other "humans" on the verge of waking up and pull them into Zion. Thus solving two problems at once.

This did not rid the system of the problem absolutely. Neo the anomaly still arose over the iterations. The thing here is this may not have been against the oracles plans. The oracle has realised that there is no way to maintain the current system. What needs to arise is a fully indipendent machine capable of generating its own purpose.

Thus we have Neo is the first machine to develop its own motivation. Morpheus and Trinity both have their purposes ingrained. One to find the One and the other to love the One. Neo however is constantly wondering just what his purpose is as well. Enter agent Smith. Smith initially has his assigned purpose. But he has been developing his own sense of hatred for that purpose. Thus when Neo "kills" Smith what he really does is destroy Smith's sense of purpose. Thus we have two programs with their own derived sense of purpose. Neo's is governed by love of life while Smith's is tainted by hatred of life. It is this conflict that will be resolved in the 3rd movie.

The Oracle has made sure that no specific agenda has been handed to Neo. She has attempted to make sure that his experiences favor life but at no time does she tell him his purpose. He has to find that for himself. She tells Morpheus and Trinity but Neo is clearly left in the dark.

In the end of the movie we see Neo starting to realise that he is still in the matrix despite being "outside". Then he falls into a coma (similar in appearance to being connected to the matrix. We also see the body of the Zionist that Smith infected in a coma suggesting that both of them have realised that they are still in the matrix and are no currently in some higher register of the matrix fighting for the determination of the future of the machine AI. Life or Death. Neo or Smith.

Anyway, its just a hunch. What do you think.

5. You may be right, but
if that's how it all ends, I'm going to be sorely disappointed. At some point, the layers of deception and weirdness just have to stop or else the series is stripped of all meaning (what's the point in trying to understand when some other convoluted twist is just going to come up?) Granted, real life is like this many times, but I don't go to the movies wanting to see real life.

Of course, people seem to ignore the possibility that the Architect is simply full of shit and is lying to Neo to get him to do exactly what the machines want him to do.

6. Another thing about the machines
They seem to only offer choices in 2's. They bring things down to binary. Two pills. Two doors. What if there is a 3rd choice. What if Neo did not have to choose between either door? Maybe that is what the Oracle is trying to get him to realise. That he is not constrained.

2. One Problem with that man's theory
If all the people in the matrix are machines or AI....and the humans put them there to work....
what exactly are they doing? They aren't accomplishing anything.

4. They are existing
Its a balancing act. The theory rests on the notion that the archetect has to have enough sense of selfpreservation for the machines that he implements the Matrix. In actual fact the Architect could simply be a program left by humans to seek survival. Originaly for humans but then when they died out it converted the command to survival of self and machines.
