I may no longer be a Cowboys fan
The New York Jets released veteran quarterback Vinny Testaverde, seen here in 2001, paving the way for him to reunite with former coach Bill Parcells in an expected signing with the Dallas Cowboys(AFP/File/Tom Mihalek)

1. You plan to stop being a fan over this?
I'm telling you right now: Vinny will not play a down unless there are some major injuries to Carter and Henson.

He's being brought in to mentor both of them. He did a great job doing the same thing with Pennington in NY. I am not a Cowboys' fan, but I think it's a good move.

2. He didn't mentor Pennington
He kept Pennington off the field for at least a year because he was "Vinnie and the Jets".

I can' stnd Vinnie. I didn't like him at Miami U and he replaced my all time favorite BERNIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8. hang on.
Say you don't like him if you don't like him and leave it at that.

But he did, in fact, mentor Pennington.
Chad was on the bench for most of his first two seasons because they thought Vinny still had something left in the tank and the Jets were still a playoff team.

In 2000, Vinny had a pretty good year and the Jets were in the playoff hunt (Al Groh was head coach that year and was utterly clueless)...

In 2001, Vinny led the Jets to the playoffs.

In 2002, Chad Pennington took the reigns and Vinny stayed around as insurance and to mentor him.

Last year, Vinny came off the bench when Pennington shattered his wrist.

Vinny is not my favorite player (not even sure why I'm defending him, other than the fact that I just really want to talk football), but he's got a good sense of the game and will probably be one heck of a position coach one day. Given his relationship with Parcells, I don't think that's too far-fetched a scenario.

17. Before the 2001 season I heard "Pennington isn't ready"
In an offhand way from someone (Salisbury) in ESPN, BS! Pennington was ready when he left Marshall. I saw him play 4 games (the Moss years and after) and he was ready then.

5. Rumor: Vinny to Pats if Dallas deal falls thru?
Belichick likes Vinny too, though it's not an urgent thing for the Patriots. But if the Big Tuna doesn't land a deal for Testaverde, he could be headed for a backup role behind Tom Brady.

Don't quite know how I feel about this.

6. where did this rumor birth from?
first i've heard of it. i can't see biLL taking vinny. we got brady, davey, and the rookie (kLingbury?). beLicheck has been grooming davey.

i think it wouLd be a waste of cap space (a big biLL no-no), but if he decides to do it... "in biLL we trust".

9. WEEI Radio, Tuesday morning.
I wish I could remember who said it... someone on Boston sports radio, and he made it clear that it was just a rumor at that time.

Personally, I agree with you. I think it's pretty unlikely that Vinny would come here, especially with the way Davey has progressed. I hear he's been having a good season in NFL Europe.

11. Speaking of not playing a down
You're only kidding yourself if you expect to see Drew Henson in any significant action this year. He hadn't picked up a football in years and needs a LOT of development. That's probably the reason Parcells is bringing in Vinny to begin with - to give Drew a mentor.

You'll live with a dufus like Jones as owner, but Vinny's "over the line."

13. So what?
Vinny's still a minor distraction compared to the Jerrhead. Besides, those Super Bowl wins had far more to do with the stupidity of the Minnesota Vikings than with anything Jerry did.

18. True and more to do with Jimmy Johnson
Switzer just had to make sure the balls had air in them. But then Jerry did hire Jimmy

21. Yes, hiring Jimmy and The Big Tuna were two very good decisions.
Both of which go to show just how important good coaching is in the NFL.

15. Gibbs' impact is far overrated
Unlike Parcells and Vermeil, who were broadcasters in their "retirement", Gibbs hasn't even been near football in what, a decade? He's got a LOT of readjusting to do, and I really don't think he's going to be quite what a lot of people are expecting. Give him a year.

20. Never coached under free agency
He (everyone) could stock their teams 2 or 3 deep, you can't do that anymore. The 'Skins fans around here think the Super Bowl is already a given :eyes: they are very loyal those 'Skins fans...........I'll leave it at that.

And I don't blame them for being delusional. This place hasn't seen a good pro sports team in a decade.

24. The Redskin's problem is that they have too many chiefs..
The owner needs to shut up and let the coaches coach.

12. Ha Ha
Good luck with him. I like the guy personally, because he comes from my hometown, but he doesn't have anything but his arm strength left.

If you need a solid, smart, backup then he's perfect. Just pray he never has to get into a game.
