I have 45 people on my ignore list ... and counting.
Anybody got me beat?

I firmly believe in free speech... and my right not to have to listen to it. Putting someone on ignore is like taking a channel off of the channel list on your tv... it narrows your surfing experience to suit your tastes.

Of course, I could be missing some good input. So here is how I decide. When I identify a candidate for my ignore list, I look at a bunch of his posts and see if they are all of a kind, from some single, narrow perspective --- a perspective that I am all too familiar with. If so, on the list he goes.

Now I don't necessary put tinfoil hat types, or rude people, or people who post in huge numbers, or any specific type of people, really, on my list. People who come from places where I can't go, or can go to places where I can't go, never go on my list. I want their perspectives so that I can expand mine.

People see the same things very differently and I feel little need to think about or deal with familiar perspectives (these should have already been factored into my thinking --- and it is the rare, precious gems that I really want). I, for example, think that this is a subject of little gravitas. But I can also see how some people might take it very seriously and would be offended by someone arrogant enough to "condemn" people without really, really listening to all that they have to say. But why bother about it? This is just a matter of taste, my taste. It is not a matter of principle --- at least not for me --- at least not any more.

And that is all I have to say about that.

4. Why do you need a button to ignore posters?
There all sorts of posts that I pass right by because they don't pique my interest.

I have nobody on ignore. Nobody offends me that much, and if they bore me, I can ignore tthem without the button.

But whatever floats your boat, buddy.

5. That's too many.........
you're missing too many opinions even if you don't agree with them. I've been here a long time and I only have one person on my list. That one is on a personal level though, not because he's a nitwit or trouble maker, just because his style grates me.
Loosen up a little, if you can read this. ;-)

6. That's just amazing. 45 people?!?!?
I have no one on my ignore list. Zip. Zero. What I find even more amazing is that you feel a need to tell the world that you have 45 people on your ignore list.

You probably won't see this.......

11. So I do have more to say about that.
On my tv, channels come and go on the channel list ... so, as a guess, it will happen... in some way.

Of course I also use a second browser configured to let me see everything, when I am of that mind.

But I see nothing wrong with being of either mind.

8. 45? Wow! Perhaps you are not seeing the common denominator
here. I have only had one person on ignore and took him off after a week. Cool off period basically.

10. is this something to brag about?
I think not.

I have nobody on my ignore list. Because I am capable of understanding that people are allowed to have a differance of opinion from me. No matter how wrong and misguided it may be. Which might be why I frequent freeper blogs. Just to remind myself of why my views are right. They're right because the other side is so blatantly wrong.

13. This Is Not An Effective Way To Win Friends And Influence People...
But I'm thinking that wasn't really your intention, was it?

Anyway, I certainly hope that sharing your criteria with us on what makes someone worthy of being on your "unignored" list helps to improve your experience here at DU and that you're showered with messages that are "rare, precious gems"... just like you want.

'Principle', 'taste', 'gravitas'... what's the diff? It all comes off sounding rather smug and self-righteous to me. But that's just how it sounds... I'm sure you didn't mean it to sound that way, right?

14. Holy crap, am I taking the "third way?"
Some of the responses to this (and every "ignore list") thread I find odd. Oh, don't get me wrong -- I find a 45-name-long ignore list odd, too. But, for most people, it is NOT about a "difference of opinion."

I have nobody on ignore right now. But since I joined, I have had 4 people on ignore, for varying lengths of time.

It was not because I didn't value their opinions; it was because at the time I put them on ignore, they were being such assholes that if I got into arguments with them I woulda gotten my OWN ass banned.

It ain't worth it.

Now, to be fair -- I spend the VAST majority of my DU time in the Lounge. That means it's almost all about personality conflicts. Since I don't go to GD, I don't often get all riled up about people with different opinions. Of course, if I DID go to GD, I still wouldn't ignore people based on that.

Other opinions are good to be exposed to. That said, it's nothing short of stupid to allow yourself to get bent out of shape over someone you just can't deal with on a personal level, even if that feeling is only temporary.

I can think of several former DUers who never would have been banned had they made more liberal use of the ignore button. Instead, they got pulled into personal flame wars, and *poof* Tombstoned.

Screw that.

without the ignore button.

Ignore threads, though, is a very useful feature. One I'm about to use.

I ignore hundreds of folks here - but I don't need to use the ignore feature or hide a thread or anything else.

I just skip over what they said!!!

18. The only reason I use the ignore thread thing...
is to reduce the clutter of threads I can't imagine ever wanting to read. Like sports threads.

Never because someone or something pissed me off. That's when it gets interesting.

25. Am I on it?
If not could you put me on it, I'll say nice things about Israel...whatever it takes really.
:)

Hey now that the U.S.S.R. has gone belly up and the P.R.C. has taken the "capitalist road"...doesn't that make tiny Israel with it's high taxes and cradle to grave social welfare benefits the de facto socialist motherland?
:)
THERE that oughta get me ignored....and patronized as well.
