Going to Ottawa this summer. Any suggestions?
We're probably going to do a three city vacation: Toronto, Ottawa, and Stratford. We've been to Toronto and Stratford but have never been to Ottawa. What should we see there? I've got two daughters 16 and 13.

1. The Rideau Canal boat tours are nice.
Parliament Hill, too. The city's nice and green this time of year.

2. Can I come too?
I love Canada, and one of my online buds--whom I'd very much like to meet--is in the Ottawa area.

6. Sure!
Only you can't bring anything. Remember I'm travelling with 3 females and my 2 daughters need 3 or 4 changes of clothes for ever day.

3. Well, let's see
There's the National Museum of Science and Technology, the National Aviation Museum, The Byward Market, the "Diefenbunker", (an underground city intended to shelter the government in case of nuclear attack), just to name a few.
Not to mention all the lovely green spaces, natural parks, bicycle paths and riverside views.

4. Ottawa is a great city to visit
Edited on Fri Jun-04-04 10:42 AM by democracy eh
I spent a lot of summers there as a kid, loved it. I am hoping to move back to tha capital next year.

I take it you have been to http://www.ottawatourism.ca/english/home.cfm

virtual tours http://www.ottawakiosk.com/panos/virtual.html

What are your youngin's interests?

Ottawa is an awesome city for museums:

Museum of Civilization in Hull http://www.civilization.ca/indexe.asp
Museum of Science & Technology http://www.sciencetech.technomuses.ca/english/index.cfm
National Art Gallery http://national.gallery.ca/
Museum of Nature http://www.nature.ca/nature_e.cfm

Walk: Parliament Hill, Sparks St. Byward Market, Rideau Canal, Renegades Canadian Football League game (3 downs of excitement)

Eat: great Shawarma restaurant on Sparks, amazing Thai at the Coriander on Kent Street, oh yes and Taj Indian Cuisine on Carling - da bomb, just ask them to pick something for you. probably not 1st choice for kids restaurants, but some amazing food there.

make sure you visit the new United States Embassy, architecturally it is quite the sight.

Have fun!

7. My kid's interests can best be summed up in one word: shopping.

But they're okay with museums and we've exposed them to just about ever kind of food, so they're game for anything.

5. Amongst Ontarians, Ottawa is known as
"The city that Fun forgot."

Still, The Blues Festival and Jazz Festival are lots of fun, Canada Day on Parliament Hill is a "hoot," as we say, and the scenery - especially the Gatineau Hills - is beautiful...enjoy yourself!
