Help! I need a good lo-cal cookbook. I love to cook, but...
...when left to my own gluttonous desires, I end up with rich foods, heavy sauces, etc. And now, I need to get lean and mean again. Please, no Atkins, South Beach diets. Just a good cookbook that emphasizes healthy low-fat meals that are still tasty, as opposed to being austere and bland.

Thanks!

1. If I were you
I'd cook as you usually do but emphasize roasting and grilling rather than frying and sauteeing. Eat lots of vegetables and try to go light on the butter/oil. I discovered that eating half a baked potato with the butter and sour cream was pretty satisfying, much preferable to eating a whole potato with diet margarine.

Reasonable eating and lots of gentle exercise allowed me to lose 70 pounds and keep it off for over a year.

6. Thanks. Good advice. It's portion-size that always kills me...
...When I cook meat, fish or fowl for two, I tend to use recipes that are for "3 or 4 servings." And it all gets eaten! I guess I have to be pretty hard on myself about this.

7. Yeah. I dig "Moosewood." But those recipies can be pretty caloric.

12. Just substitute with low-fat or non-fat
ingredients. I have every Moosewood cookbook (including Mollie Katzen's of course). My favorite recipes taste just as good with lo-fat cheese, etc.

Honest. :-)

Some recipes available at:

I have found some good recipes through Cooking Light, and I like getting the magazine each month. Always something new to try with whatever is in season.

9. Thanks. When I was in college, my mom would send my "Cooking Light"...
...and I always ignored it and went back to perfecting my Buffalo Wings recipe. Now, years later, I guess ol' mom was right.

But ain't it always that way?

10. I second Cooking Light!
Plus, here are some great Weight Watchers cookbooks.

I have almost this entire magazine-type collection, and everything I make is wonderful. Some of the books are better than others. They run the gamut of all desserts, all fruits and vegetables

This one is by far my favorite:

There's an amazing recipe for Dijon Pork Loin that we make quite a bit; makes a very impressive dinner when we have guests over. It's also great on the grill. We made it for Memorial Day last week.

Here's another. A little fu-fu, but delicious stuff

13. Have you heard of the macrobiotic diet?

For me personally, I love Kristina Turner's "The Self-Healing Cookbook".
It gives you a lot of insight into why foods make you feel the
way they do, why we experience cravings, things like that.

Foods that are natural, whole, and high fiber are the best
for weight loss. . .Christine Pirello also has some good books
out. Then there is the classic, Aveline Kushi's complete guide to
macrobiotic cooking...

Good luck... PM me for more on macrobiotics if you want...

14. Jane Brody's cookbook is excellent
Lots of lower calorie versions of favorite dishes. And she gives some good hints for cutting down the calories and fat.
