2. It sucks that its during the week by me....
I can't afford the days off to go. Or even the one day off. I'm very dissapointed. But with a young child and two working parents, we have to use our vacation days to accomodate our baby sitters (my mom's) needs rather than my desire to see a good 2 days of music.

5. For me listening to Sonic Youth is walking a tightrope....
When they veer too far into the experimental wankery, they lose me (the SYR releases). When they try too hard to go straightforward (ie. the Dirty album) they bore me.

But when they get the balance right (Sister, EVOL, Daydream Nation, etc.) I am in awe of what they can do.

They are also my inspiration for remaining cool as I age. If they can be as cool as they are in their late 40's then I've got nothing to worry about at age 34.

8. It seems that we both like Sonic Youth at the exact same point ...
on the tightrope. "Sister", "Evol", "Daydream Nation" ARE fantastic. Along with "Blow Job" (the bootlegged demos for "Goo")

The rest? The Emperor's New Leather Jacket

9. "Emporers New Leather Jacket"...hahahahah...nice
I can respect what they do, I just can't listen to when they veer too much in either direction. To be honest, they pretty much lost me when they tried too hard to break in the mainstream and started glomming on to every young artist and style that would allow them to swing from their proverbial nuts.

12. I 'll never get why SY is SO criticized by SO many...
...I'm not saying that you haven't made a valid point here, but for me, at least, SY is such a great fucking band, and have been so for more than 20 years and remain so to this day. Yeah, you could argue that they haven't recently achieved the glorious mind-bending heights of "Sister" and "Daydream Nation" with their last several albums---and you'd be right. But here's a band that has never compromised on integrity, and I disagree with those who say it was a tragedy/whatever when they signed with Geffen back in the '90s. Good Christ, if that ain't Jesuitical nit-picking, what is? Has the band sold out for commercial reasons? No. Would they like a hit some day? Probably. What's wrong with that?

Sounds to me, vi5, that their experimental stuff bores you and their "straightforward" stuff bores you too. Do you really think the band has lost all relevance in the last 15 years? Sounds like that's what you're saying. I respect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

I remember seeing SY at Lallapolooza in '95 (I think), and SO many 19/20-year-olds in the crowd couldn't have cared less about what they were doing. They dissed the band big-time. That was tough to witness. I couldn't believe that these idiots had NO appreciation for what SY had done for music in America.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing them again. Last time was in Central Park. They're old, yeah, but they've still got it.

7. For $75...
The Flaming Lips had better come to my house and do yard work.
I don't care who's playing, concert ticket prices are ridiculous anymore.

18. that Wayne guy would never get any work done...
he'd just stand around flapping his gums. Man can that guy talk a lot without saying a damn thing. I saw them once, and boy! YAK YAK YAK YAK! More rock, less talk I should think. Still a pretty good show and a great band, though.

10. Thanks for the heads up!
Just bought my tickets for Mansfield, MA...could care less about Morrissey, but Sonic Youth & the Von Bondies both are incredible live (I've seen SY 8 or 9 times, and they are STILL great, and I saw the Von Bondies last year opening for the Cramps, and they blew me away)...

Woo hoo!

11. Pixies only playing the NYC date
and Wilco, and PJ Harvey playing selected dates. Either way wish the tour was coming close to my town. Does anybody know if Perry Ferrell is using Clear Channel to promote the tour?

13. le tigre!
you guys are overlooking the real reason to go to this show. kathleen hanna (of bikini kill, originally) is probably the best political musician working today
letigreworld.com

also, the $75 is for two days. it's 49 for a single day. i have tickets in front of the stage for day 1 in cleveland and w/ a service charge it was only $53, which isn't too bad for 8 bands.

now when r.e.m., who i love, go on tour by themselves, play for only 2 hours and charge over $75, that's pure bullshit-last year was the first time ever that i missed an rem tour. i dread seeing what u2 is charging next year. they kept it down at $50 for front row last ime, but i'm sure it will be more.

14. Not alternative but........when the Eagles came to town
$150 per seat BEHIND the stage. I paid for ten tickets for that much money on the U2 tour that became "Rattle and Hum" it is ridiculous.

15. when is the Cleveland show?
Edited on Fri Jun-04-04 03:38 PM by tigereye
with no Pixies though... I would like to see Kathleen Hanna though, I never got to see Bikini Kill. I would love a Lollapalooza and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame roadtrip myself. But why is Mike Watt on the second stage. That is sad. Spoken as an old schooler.

17. cool. Thanks.
We are getting Wilco for free here in Pittsburgh this Sunday and then Patti Smith on Wednesday for our arts festival which had Sonic Youth and Wilco last year. The music is really good and quite eclectic and free! I missed Sonic Youth, though. Would have preferred to see the Pixies somewhere.

I did see Calvin and Beat Happening once, though.

21. yeah I am looking forward to seeing them,
someone else told me they saw Patti for free in DC at a protest of some sort. I have seen her twice and paid, so I think I could deal with a free concert. I did see the Replacements once here as well, they were as shambling and drunk as one would expect! I don't think I really "got it" at the time. People really didn't know what to make of them. Paul is cool.

22. Great pic of Kathleen!
She's awesome...I love me some Bikini Kill! Does she perform any of the BK songs live w/LT? I'm guessing probably not, 'cause it is a totally different band, but I regret never being able to see BK live. When's that reunion tour gonna happen?
