Is there some way to upgrade my Windows 98 to SE?

More and more applications are requiring SE to be the minimum operating system, and I'm kinda left out in the lurch.

And no, I don't wanna upgrade to XP - I've seen it, it sucks.

I'm sure that you can download 98SE using Ka(coughcough)ZaA, were you so inclined.

Make a backup disk before installing it, just in case.

and don't realize it.

RIGHT click on you "My Computer" icon. Under the "general" tab if it says "Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition" then you alreaqdy have SE.

5. Seriously, don't even bother. Either go XP or Linux.

XP is, by the way, much easier to tame than people believe. Just make sure that you get the essentials, like Ad-Aware by Lavasoft and Zonealarm (both are freeware).

XP might fit on it, but it wouldn't leave much room for anything else.

7. Are you in the position to spend $400-$500 bucks?

If so, find an indie computer shop, and see what they can do for you. I go to "Two Guys from Kabul" (not the real name) down the street, and they put together a brand new motherboard, 256 megs of RAM, a 40 gig HD, and one of the new 1.3 gig AMD processors for me, all for $450. They gave me Norton Antivirus for free, too.

8. How old?

CPU speed, memory amount, free disk space...

XP ($200) wants a P3-800, 256MB RAM, 2GB hard drive space - minimum, try 384MB RAM or more highly recommended.

SuSE Linux Personal Ed ($45) wants P3-300, 128MB RAM, under 650MB for a basic install.

13. I hate ZoneAlarm.

It got on my nerves so much that I uninstalled it. I got tired of having to give permission to it for every damn website I visited.

Black Ice is also good, but not nearly as "needy". To each his/her own. I've never had a virus, though.

14. You didn't configure it right

Seriously...I'm not trying to insult you.

Just turn off the notification for every warning. Also, when you want a program like IE to access the internet, look for that little check box that says "Remember this answer," and you won't have to do it again.

Also, try the new version...it's preconfigured to let IE go by.

Black Ice Defender has some serious holes in it, and you have to pay for it.

(on edit) I get maybe one Zonealarm notificaton per month, or if I install a new program.

I didn't take it as an insult. I just have a short attention span, and ZoneAlarm got on my nerves. It's likely I didn't configure it correctly. Still, I have had no viruses ever, so I'll stick with it. Much of that might be due to still running 98SE; most new viruses are geared to attack XP users.
