One of my cats took a dive in the lake this morning!
She was being chased by a neighborhood dog and tried to climb a tree but couldn't make it. She took off straight for the lake and I heard a splash. Next thing I knew she came racing into the house looking like a drowned rat. She hid in the utility room cowering and shaking. She has just emerged but won't go out. I think she is in shock. As far as I know, she's never been in water before...but it's nice to know she can swim! Does anyone have a cat that likes water?

1. Haha!
That's hilarious!

No, my cat hates water. In fact, if you spill one little drop of water on her, she runs and cowers like what your cat did.

2. For them not to freak out, you have to introduce them young.
When one of ours was a kitten, she started hanging out in the shower with us. She seems to have no fear of water now.

4. LOL! What a brave kitty
to jump in the water to escape.

If she lets you, towel her off and let her snuggle with it. It'll warm her up a bit and help her feel secure again.

I don't now, but I had several cats who were known to take a dip, esp in the Dog Daze of August.

5. Heh...all cats can swim...most just don't like it.
When I lived in LA one of the first things I'd do with the young kittens is put them in the middle of the pool and guide them to the shallow part where the steps began, so if they fell in they would be familiar with the safest route out.

On very hot days, I would often place the cats on the top step to cool them down. They seemed to like it.

21. Do you think your technique
with the kittens would work with older adult cats - I'm moving to a house with a screened in pool would love for the cats to be able to come out with me, but am afraid they will fall into the pool - what do you think - I guess I can just try it and see....

23. On a hot day, place them on the top step
for starters. I would definitely go closer to the step for an older cat. They seem to panic more when faced with something so new.

8. My GF's ginger cat (Orange Roughy) regularly falls into her pond
The boy is loveable, but just plain accident prone. In the winter he came in covered in icicles! Poor thing. He's my favorite (of her 11).

9. I had a cat named Stupid once who loved wading
She would wade up to her chin in water to take a drink. And any time she saw a dog, she would walk straight up to it and sniff its breath in greeting. If the dog was barking or had its fur up, it didn't matter, she'd calmly walk up to it and give it a good sniff. It used to confuse the dogs so much that they would stop attacking - - a couple even ran away in terror.

We always figured she was raised with a bunch of dogs with no other cats around.

10. One of mine...
... joined me in the bath tub once, but only once and I'm sure it wasn't planned by either of us.

I have found that cats can manage water, but they would really prefer not to. She's probably more upset at having to jump in the water in the first place when her plan was to use the tree. It seems to be something to do with their personal dignity.

Anyhow, dry her off, tell her how pretty she is, and a can of tuna wouldn't hurt.

11. I have a black siamese who
loves water. She loves to dabble her paws in the toilet water as long as it's clean water. She stands right outside of the shower and when I'm through she gets in and rolls around in the water.

12. One of mine goes out when it thunders
For some reeason he seems to feel safer outside in a thunderstorm. He'll come back soaked, accept a towelling off, groom himself and take a nap.

The smart cat goes under our bed.

13. Musta been Miles, right?
The other one would have just killed the dog and taken a nap on its corpse. So it was Miles that hit the water, right?

her coat has turned grey...my bet is that she is now officially an "inside cat". Miles still reigns over the wilds!

15. My old cat Larry Bud...
used to like to sit on a corner of the tub and watch me while I showered. He was so cute! He'd cock his head and everything!

Then when I was done, he'd get in and lick all the water out of the bottom of the tub.

He was adorable. Quinn reminds me of him.

20. My sister's cat loves to swim!
We've always thought it was a bit odd, but Pearl loves the bathtub. If she doesn't close the door when she's filling the tub -- or in the tub -- Pearl will go for a swim. Pearl has her own bathtub toys.

She found a photo and description of "Turkish vans" that looked and sounded just like Pearl. But Pearl is the daughter of a Wisconsin barn cat.

22. When I'm in the shower, Jack likes to jump in one end of the shower and
run out the other end. I guess it's like running through the sprinkler.

Just to clarify: Jack is my cat.

25. I have a male Snowshoe, Dobbs, and he is a water-nut...
The Snoeshoe breed, I've learned lately, is hard-wired for water attraction -- who knows why?

When my wife takes a bath, he will sit on the edge of the tub, dip his paws in (and his tail, too). He's fallen in once, and was none the worse for it.

He will get in the shower the moment I turn the water off, and play with the standing water, etc.

When I use the ice dispenser on the refrigerator, he comes running into the kitchen, skids to a stop, and demands some ice. It put a couple of ice cubes in his bowl, and he proceeds lick them and play with them, pull them out of the bowl and knock them around the tile floor.

When I brush my teeth, he jumps up next to the sink, and plays with the running water.

He is a caution!

26. My August used to love sittin' on the side o'the tub.....
....while takin' a shower she'd want to drink water outta your hand...when takin' a bath she loved to dip her paws in the water....she loved to lay in the sink or just stand in it and drink when it was runnin'....I still laugh when I remember the first time I asked a friend how to get her to stop tearin' up the window blinds...she told me to squirt her with a water automizer of some sort...so I tried it and she just loved to get a nice refreshin' spritz...then right back to shreddin' my blinds! Oh...how I miss her company when I bathe...still!

My sweet ol' 14yr old I have now...Angel...will take a drink outta the sink if the water's runnin' but that's it...nothin' else! :D

27. My cat fell in the pool a few weeks ago....
And was out like a shot and through the house trailing his wetness everywhere. Took him a few days to get close to the pool again. And... No... he doesn't like to swim. :)
