Am I entitled to compensation?
Hello. I am working on a few potential web designs for a client, which I will send them tonight and will be decided upon next week.

Is this time billable, or is only the accepted design - during implementation - billable?

Thanks!

1. This is billable time. Bring them a number of ideas
and let them choose one, or mix and match bits between them.

Bill them again for putting it all together in html/flash/whatever.

2. It depends on what was said earlier about what wasto be done and the
designs. Did you discuss payment at all?

5. To an extent.
I said that the site needed an overhaul, he agreed and sent me a timeline for designs completion to be sent to him to show at a committee meeting... and some more information to put up on the current site, which I did do.

I think it's all billable and I will outline it in my next bill. The contract I have with them, as I recall, is generalized but supports my position in this respect.

I intend to spend no more than 10 hours, which will give me about 4 or 5 finished basic designs. That equates to $450. I've spent 3 hours and have nearly 2 designs done already, so the time needed might be less than anticipated. (of course, implementing the chosen design will take a lot longer so if they accept one, I will probably give them a big price break or not even include the design creation aspect, just the implementation.)

3. you should have agreed on this beforehand
seems unless you had an agreed upon figure for the final result, or per hour rate, they can refuse to accept your terms and call it off...always get a contract first.

6. I do have an annual contract, fortunately:
At an hourly rate, though the contract does that I would charge $750 for the initial design - but that was 2 years ago, the initial design. (either of us can cancel the contract at any time though)

After all is designed, accepted, and implemented, the net cost to them will be about $1000 tops. It's a small website (12 pages)...

4. It's billable
You're working on their design, unless there is something in the contract that forbids billing for that.

7. It's billable unless it was considered spec work, which is what he might
be thinking. I'd submit a bill, but I wouldn't press it if he balks (if he doesn't like the designs).

Best to have these things agreed to beforehand.
