Linda Ronstadt fans
Name your favorite album/single from La Ronstandt.

Mine: "Allison" from "Back In The USA" she did a great cover on Elvis Costello's classic.

1. I have the Picture Disc of that one
but she's convered so many genres it's IMPOSSIBLE not to have a favorite in each one..soooo....

In her country rock genre, my favorite is Heart Like a Wheel

In the Mexican genre...Canciones di mi Padre

In jazz, Lush Life

and I LOVE the lullaby disc she made for her baby, Dedicated to the One I Love

4. mmmmmm Canciones di mi Padre
I LOVE that record. My favorite songs are "La Charreada" and "Los Larureles". I don't speak Spanish, but those songs just get me going.

I saw Linda at the Cinco De Mayo parade in SF years ago and she was on a float singing. She belts those songs out with so much power.

2. Her cover of "Willin'". Linda was never better than >
when she was under Lowell George's influence. Absent the cocaine addiction, of course.

6. Oh, geez, you want me to CHOOSE?
I adore "Allison" (Elvis' original or Linda's cover, doesn't matter). And then there's...

Well I pawned my Smith and Wesson
And I went to meet my man
He hangs out down on Alvarado Street
At the Pioneer Chicken stand

Carmelita, hold me tighter
I think I'm sinking down
And I'm all strung out on heroin
On the outskirts of town ...

. . . . .

You're a doll
Your eyes see all
But How Do I Make You
Wanna see me? ...

. . . . .

She did a nice job covering Elvis' "Girls Talk," too...

There are some things you can't cover up with lipstick and powder
Thought I heard you mention my name can't you talk any louder
Don't come any closer
Don't come any nearer
My vision of you can't come any clearer
Oh I just wanna hear girls talk ...

. . . . .

But I think my all-time favorite might just be:

Silver threads and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine
And I dare not drown my sorrows
In the warm glow of your wine
You can't buy my love with money
'Cause I never was that kind
Silver threads and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine ...

. . . . .

Now, let me tell you about the time Linda cooled herself down during a sultry-hot Day on the Green concert (around 1975) by pouring a glass of water over her... Well, maybe later. ;)

7. She sang backup on Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" on the classic "Harvest"
Her voice is pure silk, and her contribution in that song is just wonderful.

18. Backup vocals on Young's "Bite The Bullet" with...
...the late, sadly under-appreciated Nicolette Larson.

Probably the single most terrifying song of Young's career. Nasty, nasty guitar from his beloved Les Paul "Old Black." Ronstadt and Larson belt out the refrain over and over and over in a "call-and-response" manner to Young's verses like some kind of demented mantra.

Young has written MANY songs that sound the same...on his "Year Of The Horse" live album he yells out the intro to "When You Dance (I Can Really Love)" by saying "They're all the same! It's all one song"...but he's never written another song like this one.

Ronstadt does some career-best work on this CD:

8. Love Has No Pride
from Don't Cry now might be my favorite single, but Heart Like a Wheel is my favorite album. But really, I loved almost all her music through the seventies and beyond.

9. I covered "Easy For You to Say"
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 05:35 PM by Karenina
just to experience the JOY of imitating her voice and inflections instrumentally. Also LOVE Jimmy Webb's melodies and lyrics.

"Easy For You to Say" is the most chilling, angry 'love' song ever.

17. Someone to Watch Over Me w/ the Nelson Riddle Orch.
Her version of the Gershwin standard is absolutely perfect.

There is no better voice in popular music than hers.

I also like her cover of the Tracy Nelson classic Down So Low.

19. "Back on the Street Again"
It's an OLD one, from the EvergreenII album with the Stone Poneys in 1967. She was just getting started and I fell in love with her voice when I heard it for the first time. Actually the entire album is great except for "Different Drum" which was put in solely to be the hit single.

The two TRIO albums with Dolly Parton and EmmyLu Harris were geat as well
